Hurricane Bill, a category 3 hurricane, is raging up the East Coast this weekend. 135 mile-per-hour winds blowing offshore of New Jersey beaches will bring rough waters and high waves. Thrill-seekers may venture out on their boards, but life threatening rip currents and thundering surf will probably keep the rest of us beached.
The storm may also bring in scattered thundershowers and cause some flooding today and Saturday.

Frolic all you like, but this could be the beginning of the grand climate catastrophe we have all been waiting for. The waves are getting bigger, no doubt caused by the warming of the oceans, which have reached record breaking temperatures of late. Eventually they will swallow Manhattan and will turn the peak of the ridge that overlooks Montclair into an island. Valley Road will be a curiosity for diving enthusiasts, assuming there'll still be enthusiasm left in the world.
The oceans are definitely rising as the ice caps melt. Looks like some of the earlier low areas to flood out will include Wall Street and Foggy Bottom. Unfortunately, Bangla Desh will be an early casualty as well.
The Sky is Falling, The Ski is Falling.........
Don't be ridiculous. The sky is not falling. But the Earth is swooning.
The Earth has been around for 4.5 billion years. I think it can get along fine without us (probably better in fact). We need the Earth more than it needs us.
Looks like Kyle M would have drowned as Noah floated away.
(mathilda, that "ridge that overlooks Montclair" is called First Mountain.)
The waves at the prof's Southern Command-- Bradley Beach, started getting kicked up yesterday around 1pm.
The Lifeguards were only allowing folks in water that was waist deep.
Perhaps I will pull out the long board and give it a go...
The physical Earth shall endure. The living earth, and all the hairless apes who reside on her, may not.
Glad you have defined yourself so well mathilda
"hairless ape"
I guess you could also say sub-human, unlike the rest of us who are fully evolved.
I saw "hairless Ape" when they opened for Hendrix at Altamont.
Blew me away!!!
Cmon, Kyle - pulling rank on Mathilda?
The prof has been at the brown acid again!
Hendrix wasn't at Altamont. Prof has clearly mistaken another performer for the sainted Jimi.
It is a tribute to his recupertaive powers that the prof, after all of those years of heavy psychelics, has nevertheless emerged with his intellect intact!
Good show, my friend!
Hmmm... I suddenly find myself wondering how the cruise my sister and mom are on is going.
I just realized I haven't made it down to the beach once this summer. Nothing like the time right before a storm to watch the waves come in, hurricanes excluded of course.
C'mown, Prof, singalong with me
"and the wind.....screams........Mary....."
Arnie, thanks for the link, but I'll take Hendrix over the Beach Boys anytime.
Yes, a Hurricane in late august is so rare, must be the sign of some global catastrophe(which usually we overcome despite Chicken Littles).
"Hairless apes?" Mathilda, have you been to the beach lately? Not a lot of hairlessness happening there.
