Deliriously August

birdhouse on bay.jpgIf you haven’t seen the house on Bay Street Ave. between Mountainside Hospital and Ridgewood Avenue in Glen Ridge, you’ve been missing something. Just when everybody else’s garden has gone brown with heat, neglect or too much rain, this over-the-top cottage garden is at its peak. How did your garden fare this summer? Did your tomatoes fall to the notorious tomato blight? And did everybody find their zucchini studs when they needed them?

Killing Time, Not Mockingbirds, in Eastham

True, a staycation avoids certain pitfalls. You won’t, for example, get caught in hours of gridlock on I-95 going through Connecticut. You won’t find yourself in a strange grocery store, where all the aisles are mixed up and confusing, and where tomatoes sell at P/E ratios that even AOL might have found embarrassing in the mid-1990′s. And you won’t get sand in everything. In fact, you won’t get sand in anything.
And that would be a shame. Because August is the time to go somewhere — anywhere — that isn’t home, and to come back rested, renewed and maybe tanned.

IMG_2163-blue-heron-at-edgemont-park.jpgIt doesn’t take much to mesmerize me. The elegance of a Blue Heron (shown here grazing at Edgemont Park in Montclair on Friday afternoon) idling in a pond filled with ducks, geese, and even a Night Heron will usually do the trick.

Benson Street Station Already Looking Better

Sunday, Aug 23, 2009 8:15am  |  COMMENTS (4)

IMG_4848-glen-ridge-train-station-flowers.jpg I was visiting friends who live near the Benson Street Station in Glen Ridge on Thursday and luckily, I had my camera with me. This is the station that had fallen into disrepair, but that was recently purchased by some experienced restorers. No matter what plans are in the works for the structure, this pretty stand of robust zinnias, marigolds and bright purple clematis jackmanii certainly bode well for the project. The walkways around the site sported cheerful, healthy perennials and annuals–usually a good sign.

backpacks:.jpg In these recessionary times families across the country are tightening the belt on back-to-school spending, says USA Today. Shoppers will cut down on extravanaces, high end items, and favor Dollar Stores over department stores.
Some families in Baristaville won’t have the money to buy everything their kids need for school this year. The Montclair Episcopal churches of St. John’s and St.James are sponsoring their third annual back-to-school backpack drive to help families in need. You can make a donation.
