“O” Zone Plan Goes Back To Drawing Board

Thursday, Sep 24, 2009 1:17pm  |  COMMENTS (19)

“Maybe we’ll just leave the whole thing a complete mess.”
That statement, made by Montclair councilor Nick Lewis, pretty much sums up the mood at Tuesday night’s hearing on overnight parking in Montclair. The Star Ledger reports that after residents living in the proposed “O” zone of 27 downtown streets realized anyone could park overnight on their street with a permit, they protested vocally, fearing crime, noise and added traffic/congestion. After hearing residents’ concerns, the council rejected Lewis’ plan in a 6-1 vote.
Another defeated item — The Complete Streets policy — was voted down by council, 4-3. Here’s how the councilors voted:
Africk – N, Baskerville – N, Fried – Y, Lewis – Y, Murnick – N, Terry – N, Weller – Y.

Pahang Adds Sizzle To Verona Restaurant Scene

Thursday, Sep 24, 2009 11:31am  |  COMMENTS (24)

duck roll.JPGAs someone who was born in Malaysia and has widely traveled and eaten her way through Southeast Asia, I was delighted to hear a restaurant called Pahang, after Malaysia’s third-largest state, had set up shop on Bloomfield Ave in Verona. With readers asking to know more about it, I was only too happy to oblige, even as I appreciated the surrealism of the task – little-known Pahang (plucked out of Malaysia), in the thick of Verona (ditto, out of Italy), in New Jersey. A neat microcosm of the three continents I’ve lived in. Serendipity? No matter, I was ravenous.

Dressing For Pleasure To Close

Wednesday, Sep 23, 2009 3:30pm  |  COMMENTS (21)

dfp2.jpgThe next vacant storefront on Bloomfield Ave. in Montclair is Dressing for Pleasure, Montclair’s fetish shop that recently protested zoning ordinances prohibiting use of the store’s basement as a dungeon-like event space. Owner/master Ed Dougherty credits the bad economy as “disastrous for retail businesses, but as a specialty store, we were especially hard hit.” Dougherty says the combination of poor business and some recent health problems of his own contributed to the decision to close the store. Dressing for Pleasure on the web remains and customers can continue to shop online. Shoes, fetish wear and accessories are deeply discounted for brisk sale; Dougherty expects to be out of the space a week from today.

Free Seminar on Writing for Newspapers, Mags & Books

Wednesday, Sep 23, 2009 12:10pm  |  COMMENTS (14)

I started a business a year ago called The Writers Loft, see left. The idea was to create a quiet space for creative people to work. The space was so pretty, and I only charged writers $100 per month. I went bust within seven months. Writers like working at home, and writers don’t have an extra $100 per month.
There was a lucrative part of my business, though. I made money when I taught writing classes and seminars. Teaching adults about writing fiction and non-fiction is awesome. But I found that as a one-woman show, I couldn’t do it all. Taking in reservations and different forms of payment was about as fun as running around in the library naked.
But I do think affordable writing classes would be a go around here if there are any entrepreneurs out there.
Free writing courses are always good, too. So here’s one on Wednesday at the Montclair Public Library with lots of local experts speaking–including myself. Thankfully, I will not be naked.
Secrets of Publishing Panel
Who: Novelists/teachers Kristen Kemp and Nicole Bokat, literary agent Molly Lyons, NYT staffers Dana Jennings and Eric Copage and Speed Shrinking author Susan Shapiro
What: Experts reveal the secrets of how to get published in newspapers, magazines and books–even in a lousy economy.
Where: Montclair Public Library, 50 S. Fullerton
When: Wednesday, September 23 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Cost: Free

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
