Stocking up on Purell, obsessive hand-washing, searching the web for H1N1 clinics and buying your own yoga mat. These are just some of the precautions people are undertaking this flu season. Add this: the elbow bump. I learned about this last week after a ladies' lunch in Upper Montclair, when trying to execute a traditional cheek-peck goodbye.
Has flu phobia changed any of your personal habits? I have to admit that salad bars have lost their allure lately. I'm still biting my cuticles, though every time I do, I cringe at the idea of all the germs I'm ingesting.
Looking for a flu shot? Montclair's got a seasonal flu shot clinic today from 4 to 7 pm, which is open to residents of Montclair, Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge and Verona. Details here. We also hear there's a clinic in Hoboken today and one in Little Falls. Details of that one in the jump.
Monday, November 16, 4-7 pmLocation: Passaic Valley High School 100 East Main Street, Little Falls, NJ
There is no residency requirements for the H1N1 clinic.
All Clinics are open to all citizens, and vaccinations will be FREE OF CHARGE and available to all residents who are in the following priority groups:
--Pregnant women
--People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age.
--Health care and emergency medical services personnel.
--Persons between the ages of 6 months and 24 years old.
--People ages 25 through 64 years of age who are at higher risk for H1N1 because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

Looks like you dined (at) "Uptown." How was your meal there?
I do wash my hands more, after using the subway, also, after handling money. Lots of people forget about that one. Try to avoid sneezy and wheezy people when I can. My office handed out individual bottles of Purell. So far, we've only had on H1N1 case, so that's not too bad.
"We also here there's a clinic in Hoboken today."
here=HEAR
Thank god we can now dispense with that ridiculous ritual of shaking hands. Though not everybody has gotten the memo from the CDC.
The air kiss is great because you don't actually touch. I like the double euro version. Since doctors are telling people to cough into their elbows, kissing the air is probably safer.
H1N1 is airborne. The elbow bump wont do you much good.
I prefer the kiss and cough. Works from 6 feet.
I've finally mastered the art of sneezing and coughing into my elbow, and now this!?!
"I've finally mastered the art of sneezing and coughing into my elbow"
Which is truly disgusting. Do people really want snotty elbows?
Sneeze in a tissue in your hands, and then wash them.
ROC,
You may need a lesson in proper sneezing techniques from HHS Director Sebelius. She taught Chuck Todd(MSNBC)that the proper technique is to sneeze into the crook of your elbow. See below!
http://newsday.today.com/2009/09/19/hhs-secretary-kathleen-sebelius-calls-out-chuck-todd-for-poor-sneezing-habits/
Well ROC, I'll take snotty elbows over snotty palms. What do you do when you don't have a tissue handy? Or a sink?
I guess I could sneeze down my shirt, which would then allow me to participate in this new elbow bumping ritual.
I was always into frequent hand washing (and almost never get a cold), but I'm even more careful now. Don't forget that keyboards are loaded with germs. And put the toilet lid down before you flush!
If you cough, sneeze, and fart at the same time, you will die. I know this is true because I read it in Mad Magazine about a hundred years ago.
"Traditional cheek-peck goodbye"
GOD I HATE CHEEK-KISSING and all those who perpetrate it. It's disgusting.
People go in for a cheek kiss and then what can you do that's not going to seemingly put them in an awkward spot? You shouldn't try to do something to someone that they can't decline without awkwardness. It's just rude.
I am adding this to my worst of '09
1) Staycations.
2) Reccesionistas
3) The elbow bump
4) any sentence starting with "in this economy"
realhawker,
How about "In these tough economic times"?
or, "In our post-[something] world"!
