New Jersey the New Sherwood Forest?

Although definitely not in Baristaville, the opening of A Better World Cafe makes New Jersey the 5th state to host a “Robin Hood”-model restaurant, which allows patrons to pay according to their abilities. Located in a church in Highland Park, the cafe hopes to bring healthy food to all who need it, eschews the use of plastic and Styrofoam utensils, limits food waste by allowing patrons to select their own portion sizes, composts food waste, and only purchases seasonal ingredients from local farms within 50 miles of the kitchen.
The cafe offers one free community dish a day to anyone who needs it. Bigger meals come with a suggested donation, and those who can pay more help subsidize those who can’t. Visitors unable to pay can donate an hour of their time of for a meal.

Turkey (S)take-out! (And All The Trimmings)

turkey_on_table.jpg
This week, I’m going to be thinking a lot about food, and what I’m going to make for Thanksgiving dinner. I used to spend hours scouring Epicurious.com, gather a gazillion recipes, then struggle to short-list the winners for my table. The whole process was mind-numbing. Now, I try to simplify and get help. For instance, if there’s a big crowd, I order an extra smoked turkey and a pan of cornbread.
Make a phone call to any of these Baristaville BBQ chefs who’ll smoke, bake, or fry your turkey, and provide all the sides you need to complete your dinner. (Call and order today; pick up on Wednesday or Thanksgiving day.)
Lawrence at The Wood Pit (973-954-4679) will cook up turkey, leg of lamb, or salmon for $49.95, and is offering a full dinner for six, $150.95 with coupon. Download the Thanksgiving menu here.
At Ruthie’s BBQ (973.509.1134) Eric’s Thanksgiving menu has smoked and roasted meats priced by the pound, fixin’s by the quart. To download the menu, click here.
Lance at Indigo Smoke (973-744-3320) prepared a special Thanksgiving dinner package including sweet potato pie for $30 pp + tax. Check out Indigo Smoke’s Thanksgiving day menu, here.
More help at hand, and just a phone call away, after the jump.

After six more swine flu deaths were confirmed in New Jersey last week, making the total 28, people are still concerned about whether or not to get the vaccination.
While there are still questions about the vaccine being rushed for the public, the latest scare comes from a Youtube video about a Washington Redskins cheerleader getting Dystonia, a neurological disorder, after receiving a seasonal flu shot has been scaring viewers on the Internet, especially Montclair State University students.
Baristanet reported that the university had plans to vaccinate thousands from Nov. 9-13, however since then only about 1,400 from the campus community were vaccinated.
According to The Montclarion, 900 doses still remain from the 2,300 shipments they received. But, MSU still plans to have 6,000 more doses when they are available.
There have been 175 confirmed influenza cases at Montclair State University.

diane-israel-image-of-leave.jpgFotos For Funds is a consortium of photographers who are dedicated to giving back to the community through their art. Browse the website and take a look at the beautiful fine art photography available for purchase, as calendars, notecards, fine art prints and more. The best part is, while purchasers enjoy beautiful photographic objets d’art, they are also giving real monetary support to important charities. Fotos for Funds will introduce its members and their beautiful photographic work to the public at a fundraising exhibition and reception to be held at the Essex Fine Arts Gallery on Friday, December 4, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. The proceeds from this exhibit will be donated to the Montclair Salvation Army. What a beautiful way to enjoy lovely work and help a good cause at the same time. I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
