What Can Ben Clawson Do With a Frozen Turkey?

omnivores.jpgI’m not sure, but Colleen Finnegan, who is producing Ben Clawson’s newest play, “Omnivores,” says it’s so shocking she’s thinking of setting up an audience cam to capture reactions.
Clawson, as you may recall, is a talented young playwright who’s spun out play after play since graduating from Montclair State two years ago. We loved “Spilling Stuff and Breaking Things,” which was set in a dim little office of a school bus company. “Omnivores” is a dark comedy set in a secluded cabin.

Story of the Jazz Age Comes Alive at Montclair Library

Saturday, Nov 21, 2009 9:12am  |  COMMENTS (2)

It was one of those typically Montclair moments: The woman putting up the flyer on the bulletin board next to me at Sunrise Bagels was someone I’d been planning to write up for a weekend post. Her name is Grange Rutan, and her book is called Death of a Bepop Wife. She will be talking about her story–both the book and beyond–on Monday evening, November 23, at the main branch of the Montclair Public Library, at 7:00 pm. She tells an amazing story.

UPDATE: Adult Arrest Information (in the jump)
The mood was peaceful today as school let out at Montclair High. After two days of after-school disturbances and multple arrests, maybe the kids have had enough fighting, screaming, and punching for the week. Or maybe the 18 police officers, bolstered by a flock of undercover cops, detectives, and unmarked patrol cars stationed around the school had something to do with it.
The scene was somewhat bucolic – a warmish afternoon, sun streaming through the fall leaves, students leisurely making their way home. But seeing six uniformed cops at the corner of Midland and Chestnut, another six on Chestnut at the circular driveway in front of the school, and another six at the corner of Park and Chestnut sent a chill up my spine. I wonder what the kids were thinking.
Chief of Police David Sabagh was on the corner with his men, keeping the peace. After the students were gone, Sabagh huddled in conversation with Assistant Principal John Porcelli, councilors Roger Terry, and Rich Murnick.
“All went well today,” said Sabagh, as we all let out a collective sigh of relief. The end of the day was quiet, although Sabagh said two more students were arrested today for fighting inside the school building, bringing the number of this week’s arrests to about 20. He also confirmed three of his officers sustained minor injuries. One officer was bruised in the face because a student slapped him; one officer suffered a sprained ankle, another dislocated her finger while attempting to subdue the crowd during the afternoon melees.

MPD Deputy Police Chief Reports on MHS Incidents

Friday, Nov 20, 2009 2:46pm  |  COMMENTS (23)

This just came in from MPD’s Deputy Chief Todd M. Conforti.

Shortly before 3:00 PM on 11-18-09, police assigned to Montclair High School as School Resource Officers responded to the area of North Fullerton Avenue and Chestnut Street on a report of a fight. Upon their arrival, they observed an adult Newark male, an adult Montclair male, and a Roselle juvenile female being detained by school security. The officers were informed that the detained individuals had been involved with a physical altercation with six Montclair High School students.
During the course of the investigation, a quantity of marijuana was discovered. The three detained parties were placed under arrest. The Newark male was charged with multiple drug-related charges, Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Trespass, and Riot, with bail set at $30,000 bond. The Montclair male was charged with Criminal Trespass and Riot, with bail set at $500. The Roselle juvenile was charged with Criminal Trespass, Disorderly Conduct, and Riot. She was later turned over to the custody of her guardian.
In the presence of the police officers, an additional East Orange adult male came to the area, seemingly with the intention of instigating a fight. When the East Orange male refused to leave the area and continued his behavior, he was arrested and charged with Criminal Trespass, Disorderly Conduct, and Hindering Apprehension after police learned that he had misrepresented his identity due to having an outstanding warrant out of East Orange. Bail was set at $20,000 bond.

Can Montclair Afford A Community Center?

Friday, Nov 20, 2009 2:00pm  |  COMMENTS (42)

SeniorCtr.jpg
A prime piece of real estate which just went on the market has got Montclair Township officials buzzing. The Senior Care & Activities Center building, a 17,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art adult medical day care facility, is listed at $3.5 million. Within about a nanosecond of hearing the building was for sale, town manager Joe Hartnett zeroed in on the property as a possible community center. Councilor Roger Terry, a well known advocate for youth services, introduced the same idea at a recent council meeting. Despite a long-standing discussion about the need for a community center, Montclair’s current economic climate begs the question, can we afford a community center or can we afford not to have one?
The Montclair Times reports Hartnett has already ordered an appraisal of the property. As enthusiastic as Hartnett and Terry are, councilor Cary Africk is advocating caution. “You can’t just wake up one morning and say ‘this would be nice.’ Where’s the planning, the needs assessment, the bigger vision…the money?”

Bloomfield High Presents Antigone

Friday, Nov 20, 2009 1:31pm  |  COMMENTS (5)

Bloomfield’s budding actors have chosen a challenging play for their fall drama. The high school’s award-winningThespian Society is performing Sophocles’ “Antigone” tonight and Saturday night at 7:30 at the Bloomfield College’s Van Fossan Theatre.
The classic Greek tragedy is the story of Antigone, the daughter produced by the accidentally incestuous mating of Oedipus and his mother. Although the action is set in ancient Thebes, Bloomfield chose a 1986 BBC adaptation that uses modern language. Set and costume design include both modern and period elements. And yes, there’s a Greek chorus on stage for the entire performance.

Montclair PD: Fights At High School Not Related

Friday, Nov 20, 2009 12:32pm  |  COMMENTS (15)

Baristanet asked Montclair Chief of Police, David Sabagh, how the fights developed at the high school this week. We asked him if there was some connection between the two incidents. Chief Sabagh says the two incidents, which resulted in 15 arrests – and more are expected, do not appear related.

The fight on Wednesday, 11/18, began when young adults from Newark, East Orange and Roselle came to MHS to hand out flyers for a party. These individuals seem to have ties to a certain group of MHS students. A verbal argument, then a physical confrontation, occurred which grew larger as others joined in. Large groups started to form and refused to disperse. A second disturbance involving two juvenile females occurred as well. 6 arrests were made.
The fight on Thursday, 11/19, began when two MHS students began to fight in front of the high school. Again, a large crowd gathered adding to the disturbance. Three officers were injured as a result of the disturbance. Police agencies from several surrounding towns responded to assist in quelling the violence. 9 arrests were made.

MHS Principal Earle’s Letter To Parents

Friday, Nov 20, 2009 12:14pm  |  COMMENTS (27)

Montclair High School just sent out this letter from Principal James Earle in an e-blast to the parent community concerning this week’s incidents of after-school violence. He states that the two incidents resulted in both non-MHS and MHS students being “processed” by Montclair Police, and states “no weapons were discovered.” The email states this letter will be distributed to students today.

November 20, 2009
Dear Parents and Caregivers:
On Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at approximately 3:00 p.m., several Montclair High School students were approached by individuals who are non students as they walked home from school. Both parties engaged in a verbal argument which eventually led to physical altercation. Police were dispatched and the non-MHS students were processed. Montclair High School students were processed using the school Code of Conduct. No weapons were discovered!
On Thursday, November 19, 2009 at approximately 2:55 p.m., four students were engaged in a physical altercation after school. Police were dispatched and students were processed by school and law enforcement. While police were attempting to disperse the crowd, several students were non-compliant which led to police intervention; therefore, other individuals had to be processed.
Both events took place approximately 20 minutes after dismissal. Montclair High School’s Resource Officers, Security, Administration, Faculty and Staff have the responsibility of monitoring and supervising dismissal outside so the response was immediate. No weapons were involved in either incident.

Schools Silent So Far on Violence, 12 Youths Arrested

Friday, Nov 20, 2009 10:47am  |  COMMENTS (29)

There has been no word — official or unofficial — yet from Montclair Schools Superintendent Frank Alvarez or Montclair High School Principal James Earle on the violence that has erupted in front of the high school the past two days. Parents have not received any notifications or explanations, nor has there been any discussion with students at the school.
The Board of Ed says that Alvarez is away for the day.
The Star Ledger reports that over the past two days 12 youths have been arrested.
Despite concerns that the incidents have occurred across the street from Rand Elementary school, the secretary for Rand principal Barbara Weller would not put Weller on the phone, saying the matter was a “high school issue.”
A high school crossing guard, who asked not to be named, said police were already patrolling the area yesterday at 2:30 pm before school let out.
She said, during the middle of the fray, she saw a youth smack a policeman on the back of the head, and then the policeman turned around and slammed the kid to the ground. “He went down like a sack of potatoes. I could hear it when the kid hit the ground.”
According to a teacher and students we’ve spoken to, kids at Montclair High School seemed more excited than scared by the violence. Parents, however, find the situation very frightening.
