Bloomfield Department of Public Works, in partnership with the township recycling committee, has launched a new, cost-free public space recycling program.
The program, which is being done in conjunction with Creative Outdoor Advertising of America ("COA"), a provider of on-street amenity programs, is designed to enhance the township's recycling efforts while generating revenue for the municipality, via the 26 recycling stations throughout the town in public spaces that will feature advertising.
"This new program offers residents an additional outlet to recycle while enjoying their time out and about Bloomfield," said Councilman Nick Joanow, council liaison to the recycling committee and advocate for the new program. "We're going to bolster our litter abatement program and generate new revenue through this initiative."
This new recycling program is the first of its kind in Essex County. Additionally, Bloomfield is only the sixth community in New Jersey to offer sign-on with COA. On August 1, the township entered a 10-year agreement with COA.
Under the agreement, the recycling committee will receive a portion of the proceeds COA receives for advertising on the recycling stations. The funds will go directly toward supporting the committee's work to advance recycling to benefit the nearly 50,000 residents that call Bloomfield home.
"The department is thrilled that we're adding another program to our already successful recycling campaign," said Jerry MacIntyre, director of public works and recycling coordinator for Bloomfield. "We are on the move as a community, and continually offering bold, new initiatives, like this one, to benefit our residents."

Trading a litter problem for an eyesore problem?
Next week that sign will be advertising Lasik Surgery and it'll be graffitied.
ROC, they do it better in Jerusalem- huge steel cages every few blocks, specifically for recycling, with openings large enough for plastic bottles.
(Talk about the holy city.)
..and the public fills them to the brim.
"and the public fills them to the brim."
The filling is actually a result of the unionized "collection" service.
(a common misconception)
ROC, what are you talking about? The Jerusalem trash collectors?
but at least it's only a decade. That will give the township latitude!
Criminy, but I've got to think of some business angle I could use to shellack simpleton local pols.
The containers are not an eyesore. Graffiti is not usually on low level surfaces. They want to be seen. ROC, how do you sleep at night?
"The containers are not an eyesore."
No but this is (what advertisements do you think will end up at the entrance to The Green?)
"Graffiti is not usually on low level surfaces."
You watch.
"ROC, how do you sleep at night?"
On blue satin sheets on my waterbed like everyone else.
ROC, how do you sleep at night?
Don't bother STL. ROC doesn't believe in recycling or global warming. I'd be surprised if he believed in pollution, or evolution, or germs.
On blue satin sheets on my waterbed like everyone else.
Straight outta 1978
This is a weak half measure. Climate and the environment are urgent matters that call for urgent measures. We should be pursuing recycling with wartime zeal. The President should declare martial law and outlaw disposable packaging of all kinds immediately. Half of the nation's soldiers should be converted to garbage collectors and sent in tanks to remove all bottles, cans and styrofoam packing.
On blue satin sheets on my waterbed like everyone else.
The smart money says that ROC has a Members Only jacket and a pair of Ferrari sunglasses hiding in his closet.
Jesus H. This message board time and time again gives me the creeps and stresses me out. What prison is R.O.C. in so I can get in touch with its warden and ask he that his computer priveleges be cut off? I don't get it, you are Right of Center so you don't like advertising or something? Go take your weird ideology and, I dunno, I guess keep venting on this dumb board.
You go NICK. Best town council person Bloomfield has ever had.
BEAUTIFUL BLOOMFIELD !!!!!!!!
One of only a few communities to receive Sustainable Jersey certification.
That was a new idea for us all, jackdullboy.
It never occurred to me that ROC might be doing time even as we speak!
if there is just one more piece of advertisement in the world, then our lives will be completely changed.
Thanks to the Bloomfield Recycling Committee and Councilman Nick Joanow for making Bloomfield a Sustainable Jersey community and for continuing efforts to Green the town and keep Green in our pockets.
Your efforts are appreciated!
Awesome ... A city needs art... And we need to recycle !!!! Come ON!!! get a grip! Great Idea! Perfect Win Win solution!
