The Great Notch train station in Little Falls is scheduled to close Jan. 17, 2010.
According to the Gadfly, cybrarian Arnie Korotkin's blog on Northjersey.com, New Jersey Transit notified Little Falls this past Friday that the 104-year-old station will close due to a lack of riders.
Baristanet reported last January that NJT had been considering closing down the station if ridership didn't improve.
Commuters will be able to access alternative train routes at Montclair State University or the Little Falls station on Union Avenue, about a mile away from Great Notch.

Little Falls today, Mountain Ave. tomorrow.
This is unfortunate but not surprising. A few months ago I took the 8:15 am train from Great Notch -- one of only three morning trains, and the first one is so early (before 6 am) that it doesn't really count -- and I was the only person there.
The service cuts over the past several years have made it all but impossible to find a convenient round-trip schedule from Great Notch. Last year's service "increase" was appreciated but in practice was merely a token effort to appease the town. And now NJT finally has sufficient data on the lack of ridership to pull the plug.
It was great to have a station within walking distance, but I've made my peace with driving to MSU. Now I have to hope that the town's plan to rework the Clove/Long Hill intersection doesn't negatively impact the access to that station as well.
Ha. Thanks for using my picture of Great Notch. I seriously just took that on Saturday the 19th. That's the day i found out it was closing by the town of Little Falls.
Don't let it go to your head, Roadgeek. It's not exactly Ansel Adams. On the other hand, it was published, so congratulations. Don't give up your day job, however.
You know something. Go to hell. I am not disrespecting you for your comment above. I actually care about what I do and to be fair, the weather wasn't that great Saturday at the station. I've never actually had one of my photos used outside of my Flickr page or road sites. If you want to be rude as hell to me, I suggest taking it elsewhere.
Walleroo is a passive aggressive prick. Don't let him get to you.
Easy there, big fella. You're going to need tougher skin than that.
Walleroo is a passive aggressive prick.
Nice! No one can say that remark show passivity. It's more in the way of impotent rage.
Before this gets out of hand. I suggest giving me an apology for being rude as hell to me and criticizing one of my photos when I am rejoiced enough to have it. I do hope the poster comes in and removes this little situation. If you want to take this outside and I can punch you like a man, fine. You need to shut up your lame, bratty, preppy attitude or serious problems will occur. I am only 18 for the hell of it, give me a break when I want to enjoy something.
Adam,
I've meet Walleroo. He is well over 6 feet tall and looks like he could bench 300 lbs. Shaking his hand was like grabbing a brick. I think he works as a contractor during stints between writing gigs..
So glad we only have threats of physical violence and things have not yet gotten out of hand.
Roadgeek, your photograph isn't good, and it isn't bad. It is a pretty plain photograph of a railroad track. For all I know, you could be a wonderful photographer, but it's hard to tell one way or the other. It was published because it had news value--you were in the right place at the right time, you (presumably) sent it in, and the Baristas used it. That's just great. Congratulations. You can now call yourself a photojournalist.
How exactly do you feel you were slighted? By my suggestion that your picture wasn't going to establish your reputation as the next Ansel Adams? Or that you won't be able to make a living sending photos to the Baristas? I hope it doesn't come as too big of a disappointment.
You've already told me to go to hell, and now you're making threats. Sorry, I don't respond well to bullying: no apology for you. At age 18, you are officially an adult. Start acting like one.
Now if a train was oncoming when you snapped the photo, then I would offer you some additional props.
Give the kid a break. It's a photo meant to illustrate a story and it does a good job at that. I am sure that when Ansel Adams started out, not all of his photos were museum quality. So yeah, if it's first time being published on a blog or web site, it IS a big deal to him.
stuw6,
Start offering up the props dude. If you enlarge the picture in Wiki you can see that a train, indeed, is approaching the station.
..
Props to Adam for a pretty cool photo. Sure it isn't Ansel Adams, but only a 'photo-snob' would point that out. BTW, I was lying about the marsupial, he looks like he could bench 150 tops.., plus he lives under a porch with a female racoon. Sweet Jesus, what a living arrangement. The racoon is almost constantly in heat and will not settle for a friendly snuggle.. But for the grace of God...
There would be extra points given by all of walleroo's "fans" on this site for a picture of the critter tied to the tracks, "Perils of Pauline"-style, at the Great Notch station, as a train bears down on him..
On the other hand, Roadgeek Adam, would-be tough guys are such a bore. Especially the punk 18-year-old variety who's likely still suffering from acne and can't yet get served at the Great Notch Inn.
Leave me alone. I actually try to enjoy life. If you want to call the cops. I have mental problems and I don't keep it a secret. Can't we just remove the picture and end our problems? I don't try to be a tough guy, I am just mad as hell.
