NJ.com reports that a 17-year-old North Caldwell teen was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of destructive devices, and weapons possession.
Local authorities contacted the Essex County Sheriff's Department bomb squad after they found a metal pipe resembling an explosive in the boy's bedroom, Gutkin said. Four more explosives were later removed. Police also found two knives and an undisclosed amount of marijuana packaged in small bags. The Nutley HazMat Team and state Department of Environmental Protection were also called when police discovered about 12 bottles of an unknown liquid in the same room, he said.
NJ.com reports that agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives were present, but it was unlikely for federal charges to be made.

Bongs and bombs!
You should be writing the headlines, Frank.
Strange. I always thought that pot mellowed you out not made you want to build bombs.
There is a lot of money in North Caldwell...Guess this kid got too much of that and not enough love and caring from his parents...
The 'Soprano' house is not far from Shenendoah Dr..
I bike that area from time to time. There are some spectacular homes up there.
Nellie, I don't think that you can always assume that folks who make these kids of choices in their lives do so because they did not get enough love or attention. While many cases do indicate that, there are also plenty of examples of people who had love growing up, yet still ended up as criminals. Of course there are alos many who came from horribly deprived backgrounds who live exemplary lives.
If it was that easy, we'd have a much better chance of heading off these types of problems before they got too big.
The good news is that if he writes a book, the teen could join David Sterry and company at next year's "literati" gathering.
You are right, cro....While I think what I said is certainly true in some cases, it is not fair to generalize.
Boy times change. I never heard Wally or the Beave getting caught with weed and explosives. Maybe Eddie Haskell but not them.

yes, but remember that time when they tried to buy all that stock in Jet Electric? that was pretty hairy. Good thing Ward stopped the sell/buy order just in time.
I've never heard of a Federal law enforcement agency called the "Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives." And with an extra comma yet!
We had a tall sideboard/cupboard from around the turn of the 20th century in our house in Connecticut. We kept spare booze, cigarettes, my reloading equipment, and a couple of 12-gauge shotguns locked up in it. Of course it was called the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
cathar, when the agency was transferred to the Department of Homeland Security (from DOJ) in 2003, the "Explosives" (but not the comma) was added to the name.
there seem to be a lot of pot related arrests around baristaville. isnt it time to legalize weed already.
There seems to be a lot of armed robberies around Baristaville lately. Isn't it time to legalize robbery already?
no martha, let's keep robberies illegal. But grass is another story.
Maybe he was just trying to make an exploding cigar?
Seriously though...I don't think the pot is the real problem. Its the bombs and knives.
A stoned teen - not uncommon and fairly harmless (at least to the public.)
Stoned teen with bombs and knives - not so good.
