A woman lost her engagement ring on the streets of Montclair during a run. It is a gold band with a traditional solitaire design and it has immeasurable sentimental value. If anyone has information on the whereabouts of this ring, please contact jzwhipple@verizon.net.
If you have an item that you would like posted as lost or found on Baristanet, please send an e-mail to lostandfound@baristanet.com.

The Borough of Glen Ridge just sent a New Year’s present to all its residents: starting Jan. 1, recycling now goes from twice monthly to weekly and to single-stream, meaning that paper, cans, plastics and glass can all be mixed together. The borough also says this new enhanced service will cost up to $100,000 less than this past year’s contract.

Going for Cozy

Tuesday, Dec 29, 2009 1:50pm  |  COMMENTS (10)

cozy in the enchanted forest.jpgI’d rather be in Miami right now, where the temperature is 69 º F, but since I’m not, I’ll have to settle for cozy. Here’s one of the coziest places I know: Frank GG’s little house in the Enchanted Forest of Essex Fells. The picture was taken a few days ago, when there was still snow on the ground.
For me, cozy is a fire in my wood stove, which can be problematic unless I can get my hands on some of the good birch they sell in grocery stores. It ran out everywhere over Christmas, but started reappearing a few days ago. Add some tea lights, some hot cocoa or coffee, a book or two and I’m set. If you want to go out, here’s a list we collected a few months ago of cozy dining spots nearby.
Over at Barista Kids, though, they’re embracing the Arctic temperatures. Stay here to discuss keeping warm. Go there to find some nearby ice skating options. And tell us how you keep warm.

sherlock, orson, avatar.jpgTis the season to watch movies, and if Facebook is any guide, the one you’ll all be talking about is “Avatar.” But we’ll hand it over to you. Here’s your open thread on year-end entertainment. What have you seen, were you wearing 3-D glasses and was it any good?

Montclair’s Biggest Party Of The Year – First Night 2010

Coming to a neighborhood near you…Baristaville’s annual New Year’s Eve entertainment extravaganza: First Night Montclair 2010 – spectacular performances of dance, music, magic, comedy – and more – in 17 downtown venues.
Eileen Sheehan, at Montclair Parks and Recreation, tells us she’s been working on this production since January 2. “It’s an affordable, family-friendly event with first-class entertainment,” says Sheehan. Emphasis on affordable. The whole evening costs about $100,000 to pull together, but thanks to Sheehan’s creativity (and hard work), more than 80% of the cost is subsidized through various grants, sponsorships, and private donations.
“We’re expecting 5,000 – 7,000, a slightly higher number than last new year’s eve, which was bitterly cold. Thursday’s forecast is a clear night in the high thirties,” she said with confidence, and fingers crossed. And in the lineup – some of the performers are local favorites, but many are new to Montclair.
The show you really don’t want to miss,” says Sheehan, “is Fantasy On Ice, performed on synthetic ice on the stage of Hillside School auditorium. It’s extraordinary!”

Hold Onto Your Hats

Tuesday, Dec 29, 2009 8:39am  |  COMMENTS (6)

Yes you can probably hear and feel it, but there’s also one of those ALL-CAPS weather alerts in our mailbox today from EmergencyEmail.org.

STRONG NW WINDS CAN BE EXPECTED TODAY IN THE WAKE OF AN
ARCTIC COLD FRONT. WINDS WILL GRADUALLY DIMINISH TONIGHT AS THE
PRESSURE GRADIENT EASES.

With occasional gusts of up to 50 mph, we wouldn’t be surprised to hear of some trees down today. Snap us a picture with your cell phone and send it to tips. And button up. Weather.com puts the current temperature in Montclair at 20º F — and it “feels like” 5º F, if you believe in the wind chill. (The way it feels inside my house this morning, I do believe in the wind chill.)

Another Lawsuit for Bloomfield Redevelopment

Monday, Dec 28, 2009 1:51pm  |  COMMENTS (23)

Ellenbogen property.jpg
Bloomed faces yet another lawsuit in the attempt to redevelop downtown Bloomfield Center.
Bloomfield Parking Authority was given authorization to use eminent domain to seize property last year. This was the townships most recent attempt to move the redevelopment forward since 2006 when the New Jersey Supreme Court refused to overturn a 2005 decision that stopped the condemnation of downtown properties.
Tony Ellenbogen, owner of the former Animal Instinct pet supply store and landlord to Garden State Yoga, said he was forced to file suit in Superior Court. “It is clear that this is an effort by the town to side step the legally binding settlement they made a couple of years ago stating that they would not take my property through eminent domain,” Ellenbogen said.
In 2008, Baristanet reported that the township was willing to pay 100 percent of market value for Ellenbogen’s property, the now closed Animal Instinct business and the parking lot next to it. However, the council already drafted an ordinance giving Bloomfield Parking Authority eminent domain if Ellenbogen and the town did not come to a negotiation.
The law firm of Potter and Dickson of Princeston filed Ellenbogen’s lawsuit. Attorney William Potter will challenge the government of Bloomfield with issues of blight; the true purpose of the Parking Authority’s use of condemnation and the agreed upon Consent Order stating that eminent domain would not be used.
“It is a shame that the Bloomfield Mayor and Town Council continue to behave in a manner that is really contrary to the welfare of the entire town and its commercial land owners,” Ellenbogen said. “While they promised a new redevelopment plan that was inclusive and cooperative and that would not pursue condemnation, it seems they really have their own agenda, and are being manipulative to achieve it.”
Mayor Ray McCarthy does not know anything about the lawsuit. “I know nothing about it and I don’t know why he would file a lawsuit against Bloomfield,” he says.
