A Cushion That Puts Montclair On the Map

Carol Jafferjee over at Jafajems decided that the only thing missing from the cool line of state and city themed pillows was a Montclair pillow. So she had one made, and included a panoply of local landmarks, businesses (her own included, of course) parks, and more. Hurry and you can still get one in time for Christmas!

Bike Ordinance for Montclair

Thursday, Dec 24, 2009 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (61)

Montclair’s planning board passed this Bike Ordinance, which will voted on at a future council meeting. Says Mayor Jerry Fried, “It’s a very common sense move and it was pretty unanimous, possibly with Cary Africk being the only one who voted against it.”
Says Africk, “I am against it because it is so inappropriate at this time of fiscal crisis for the town. It is a matter of priorities. The mayor needs to look at the budget. He needs to look at our $200MM plus in debt.”
Fried says the ordinance is next being looked at in January. It does require some indoor protected storage for a certain number of bicycles. “It’s not terribly restrictive and is just baby steps away from vehicle use,” says Fried, adding that several progressive towns and cities have taken steps like this and studies show there are higher property values in places that are bike and pedestrian-friendly.

Developer Shelves MSU Dorm Project on Bloomfield Ave

Wednesday, Dec 23, 2009 1:00pm  |  COMMENTS (28)

Development of a housing and retail complex for MSU students on Bloomfield Ave, estimated to cost $100 million, has been abandoned by the developer.
“I had communication from one of the developers, Pinnacle, and they said it’s not moving forward,” Mayor Jerry Fried told Baristanet.
The downtown area, at Bloomfield Ave and Valley Rd, will now be redeveloped by Montclair Township designated as a redevelopment area, which would open possibilities to outside developers, Fried said.
The developer, Capstone Companies, “was bidding on several projects, including one on housing for 2000 students at MSU,” Fried said. “Building that would be significantly cheaper than doing it on a piece of real estate like the DCH site on Bloomfield Ave, and that might have something to do with the change of plan.”
New legislation passed by NJ last summer allows MSU to have dorms built for them, by private firms, on Montclair State land.
The township “and the developer, Capstone Companies, spent a lot of time coming up with a plan (for the MSU dorms) that was workable, that would bring income to the town and pay for itself, but a change in state legislation and other factors” have contributed towards the firm and local developer Pinnacle, which handles luxury condo and urban redevelopment projects, to shelve the project, Montclair Township’s 3rd Ward Councilor Nick Lewis said.
The dorm plan would have provided housing for 800 senior students and some juniors, given a fillip to local retailers and infused a college-town feel to the area.

Brookdale Park Set-1.jpg(Adds comment from Frank Del Gaudio of Essex County)
A tipster sent us this photo depicting, for the second time in a week, a film crew hard at work on a brightly illuminated set in Brookdale Park. The set included a reference to Gobblers Knob, Punxsutawney, PA – home of a furry guy (and groundhog) named Punxsutawney Phil. Turns out it was filming in progress for a TV commercial, due to debut on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010.
Essex County’s Frank J. Del Gaudio emailed us the following this afternoon:

The filming at Brookdale Park yesterday was for a commercial for Tru TV. It is a comedy skit reenacting Groundhog Day. It will debut on Super Bowl Sunday.

Perhaps the crew had been working too hard. Debbie, driving through the park late on Tuesday (Dec. 22), said, “While I was headed around the lower loop of the park tonight, a minivan came driving down in the wrong direction. Crew mostly likely.”

Penn Station Closed: Another NJ Transit Nightmare

clever commute emails.jpg
The emails are piling up from Clever Commute: this morning’s midtown direct commute is a mess. Again. This time, due to Amtrak power problems, no trains in or out of Penn Station. From NJ Transit at 9:30 am:

Rail service in/out of New York Penn Station is temporarily suspended due to Amtrak power problems in New York. Midtown Direct being diverted to Hoboken. PATH is cross-honoring at Newark Penn, Hoboken and 33rd Street. NJT Bus cross-honoring in/out of Port Authority Bus Terminal.

And they say this can ruin your day…

State Set To Dramatically Cut Emissions by 2020

Wednesday, Dec 23, 2009 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (55)

wind farm.jpgWorld leaders failed to come up with a binding pact on climate change in Copenhagen this month, but NJDEP made the decision look a no-brainer by setting forth a landmark comprehensive plan on Tuesday (Dec. 22) to dramatically slash the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global warming pollution, by 2020.
“This report gets high marks for laying out a comprehensive plan to achieve meaningful cuts in global warming pollution … and is a reminder that state and local action must continue to drive forward the solutions to this global problem,” said Matt Elliott, global warming and clean energy advocate for Environment New Jersey, an independent non-profit organization.
The report, which can be read in detail here, comes in response to the 2007 NJ Global Warming Response Act which says the state must trim its global warming pollution to 1990 levels by 2020, and by 80% by 2050. It details more than 20 policies to rein in greenhouse gas emissions over the next ten years.
NJ’s emissions jumped 16% between 1990 and 2007.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
