The emails are piling up from Clever Commute: this morning’s midtown direct commute is a mess. Again. This time, due to Amtrak power problems, no trains in or out of Penn Station. From NJ Transit at 9:30 am:

Rail service in/out of New York Penn Station is temporarily suspended due to Amtrak power problems in New York. Midtown Direct being diverted to Hoboken. PATH is cross-honoring at Newark Penn, Hoboken and 33rd Street. NJT Bus cross-honoring in/out of Port Authority Bus Terminal.

And they say this can ruin your day…

Will you, or shall I? :-)

Do they ever divert Hoboken trains to Penn Station? It seems like this happens once a month.

MB2, I will be happy to. HOBOKEN! NjT has got to promote Hoboken more. Stop taking away stops from Hoboken trains!

I’m amazed at how many problems NJT has had this week (yes, I realize today’s issue is technically Amtrak but still) – more than usual. I note that it doesn’t say that DeCamp is cross honoring, only NJT buses, which doesn’t help much.
Hopefully they’ll be able to to fix this relatively quickly for all those people hoping to get on their way to their holiday destinations!

My goodness…it was indeed rough sledding this morning. That look at Debbie’s inbox confirmed what I thought (and just shared with Clever Commuters): it’s time for us to “turn up” the sensitivity on the software we use that checks for duplicate messages. That way, we can continue to grow…but keep message volumes manageable. Believe it or not, Clever Commute started here in Montlclair 4 years ago (although it did not have that (or any) name back then). Now, we’re nearing the 10,000 member mark…and running all across NY/NJ/CT and even Boston and Chicago. Whew! Thank you all…and get home safe!

On the contrary, Conductor Josh, you are missing an opportunity to provide a valuable service to the community. Studies have shown that bottling up our feelings only increases stress, which leads to a host of mental and physical health problems. By encouraging commuters to vent their frustrations over the Clever Commute feed, you would be promoting good mental health. Just imagine how good it would feel to be able to let fly a few bombs in the thick of the delays!
You might even automate some of the replies, so they could be entered with just a keystroke. Here are a few suggestions:
    Aaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!
    Not again!!!! Those a-holes!!!
What kind of a @$#%!%! train service is this!!!!
Those bastards! They have better trains in Bangladesh!
    … and so forth.

You know, the best solution for this would’ve been to temporarily waive the restriction on diesel-powered trains using the tubes and NY Penn – would’ve gotten SOME traffic moving, instead of the Fail-fest that was NJT and Amtrak today.

Temporarily or permanent acknowledgement of realistic common sense? Not a chance with the Goretex wackos making the “regulations.” It’s better to make a thousand people walk down the Hoboken sewage trenched stairs then allow one particulate in the tunnel. Never happen. Diesel? Feh!

I would love to see Santorum get the nod. Maybe then the politically comatose members of society will wake up.
