Twas the Night Before Christmas (or Holiday)

By Nellie

'Twas the Night before Christmas
And all thru "B'ville
Not a creature was stirring
Computers were still

Each Baristanet blogger
Was snuggly and warm
Away from the fracas
Of those B'Net storms

Karen Banda was snug in her bed with her dog
As was Jerseygurl, sleeping sound like a log
And Walleroo's stocking, that sad little sock
Was the talk of the season on Liz' whole block

Suddenly was heard in the midst of the quiet
Some couldn't believe it; they just didn't buy it
The sound of computer keys, clacking so loud
It started with one, then you had the whole crowd

It's Christmas, not Holiday," typed in some folks.
"No it's Holiday proper, I'm not telling jokes."
"The thing in the square, is a Christmas tree, see."
"No, a Holiday tree is what it's meant to be."

Then Roc he chimed in, doesn't want to be taxed
While Spiro T. Quayle claimed ROC didn't have the facts
Cathar, once again, wowed us with his fine words
In jumped Laser Lefty, said "I need to be heard."

The computers got louder as Cro joined the talk
Along with the Iceman, and Conan didn't balk
In jumped Cary Africk, his reasoning did rule
Some couldn't say enough 'bout that new Montclair School

Generically Mike had a thought here and there
And then State Street Pete had them all lend an ear
Joining the Mikes was Mike 91
Mrs. Martta had left; she was out on a run

King Harvest chimed in, as did Jimmy and Stu
Herb gave his thoughts, they were upbeat, not blue
And then Katebird Rex talked of love for her pets
Carl from Glen Ridge is as good as it gets

They all gave their thoughts that they thought were worth millions
Now here comes an idea from the well-known Prof Williams
"You're all talking now, and you're taking the bait
Let's continue this chat at my palatial estate."

So to prof's big estate the commenters ran
Ran Katie, Appletony, and Tudlow the man
At the site was NoCorzine, and Anti-cathar
Paz came from Montclair; LiFer came really far

When out on prof's lawn there arose such a clatter
They sprang from their PCs to see what was the matter
Away to the window they flew in a flash
Mellon Brush brought his cats, boy, did those felines dash

When what did their wondering Christmas eyes savor
A real true live image of a Santa screensaver
A guy with a beard and a Santa Clause smile
Greeted the crowd; his voice traveled a mile

"Hi Sandy, Hi Courson, Hi Banana Split
Hello there, Amandala, Mauigirl, You're a wit
Mathilda, who cares if my sleigh causes gases?
Hello one and all, all you laddies and lasses

Hey Cuddles, Hey Nachos, there's Realhawker, too
Hello, Frankgg, you always come through
Hey, this side of watchung, Barista Pet's here
Hello montclairmom, you have nary a care

Now, I do have to say you must call a ceasefire
Of Baristanet Bick'ring, don't you all tire?
Can't you all get along in the spirit of peace?
In 2010, all your bad words must cease.

Some of you understand blog etiquette
But others, it's courtesy that you don't get
For some here, the posting is more than a quirk
You must log out of B'net and get back to work

Treat Liz and Debbie in a much kinder manner
Stop all your picking on all the blog grammar
And then when you find you have bad things to say
Take a deep breath and just walk away

Annette works so hard putting up the blog posts
At BaristaKids, Moms and Dads like it most
And Monty and ackme, Tron, Crank, please don't vanish
You don't want to be like the folks who were banished

When Fran takes nice pics, be sure and say thank you
And try to be kind, as thumbs they will rank you
Be a little more giving, keep those thumbs raised
You'll make people so happy, they'll love getting praise

The crowd, it was hushed at Santa's deep words
Not a sound for a moment from the folks could be heard
They looked at each other and broke into smiles
The spirit of peace could be felt strong for miles

Their hearts filled with joy, all the bad feelings curbed
They even had nice things to say 'bout Joel Schwartzberg
Conservatives, liberals, friends now forever
You gotta admit it, that Claus guy is clever

And Santa, he chuckled a loud, Ho, Ho, Ho
And into the sky. he and sleigh did both go
And we heard him exclaim as he took to the air
"I'll be blogging tomorrow as Rudy Reindeer"

P.S.

If your name isn't here
Don't sit sad and hollow
Give out a shout
And more verses will follow

SWEET LORD, Nellie-- that made my day!!!

Merry Christmas to you and all!!!!

A very nice job of poesy above, Liz. My compliments. (It's certainly also more truly seasonal than the cloying concept of "Debbiemas.")

Noel to all, and best wishes for a decidedly non-secular, at least genuinely thoughtful (kind of like Sting's new CD) Christmas whatever one's religious beliefs!

And now to listen to some truly appropriate Christmas music, Alan Jackson's versions of Haggard's great, great song "If We Make It Through December," "Honky Tonk Christmas" and, of course, "Please, Daddy, Don't Get Drunk This Christmas." There is more social realism in such songs than is generally found on this web site, after all,

Really nice work Liz..

.ahh, I never make any list anymore, oh well, maybe next year.

That was very cute, Liz; it reminds me of the Roger Angel pieces that ran in The New Yorker for so many years.

So, let me sign off for the weekend with Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Festive Festivus, Hilarious Hannukah, and Kala Xristouyenna kai Kali Xronia! Whatever it is you celebrate, celebrate it fiercely. Remember our motto here on the posting side of Baristanet: Nothing exceeds like excess!

Musically, once again I point you to the 1954 recording of "White Christmas" by (the nucleus of)The Drifters -- Bill Pinkney and Clyde McPhatter.

Hey, not to toot my own horn, but I wrote it! If you go the beginning, it says, "By Nellie"

Ahhh! I missed the byline Nellie -- Good Job!

Wonderful Nellie!

Merry Christmas!

Great job, Nellie! Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. And a Happy New Year to all.

Sorry about that Nellie, I gave credit to Liz..it read very well, except I couldn't find WR in there....

Wow - Great job Nellie - Keep it coming...can't wait to see more...Fantabulous!

That.was.awesome!

cathar, in the spirit of the season, I am pleased to offer you a Christmas song that's about two decades more recent -- and a touch more upbeat -- than the excellent dirges you proposed.

Nellie,

You are truly amazing! That was really, really cool, funny, touching, poignant. My cats and I are honored to have been included in your verse.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone in B'Ville.

Nellie, you're quite the poet!

Are you SURE you're not Irish?

Alot of work, Nellie! Very good & original, but....one heck of alot of work. I think we all enjoyed it. May you have a terrific holiday and good health.

PS/ My wife love it, also!

Sandy

Nicely Done Nellie.

Merry Christmas to everyone, even Lasermike.

Ah jeez, Merry Christmas Snappy.

Have a cool yule, Nellie. There's candelaria all over the streets of GR tonight. It's a beautiful sight!

Thanks for your efforts, Nellie, and Merry Christmas to you.

My profound apologies for overlooking your authorship above, Nellie. You seem as deft a creator of light verse here as the late, great Ogden Nash (and that is no small praise).

Whoa, Nellie, and to all a good night.

From one WOman to the next, Nellie, that was brilliant!

What a creative force you are.

Merry Christmas to all.

Che bella! Tante grazie Nellie! Buona Natale a tutti!

Nellie, I love it! Thanks so much for including me...but I have cats, not a dog (much as I love them also!). Hmmm....maybe Santa will leave one under my tree tonight?

Merry Christmas to all!

Spot on Nellie!

Happy Everything to Everyone!!!

Here you go, Wayne:

If your name isn't here
Don't ya be sobbin'
Let's give a shout out
To our dear friend Wayne Robbins

Wonderful, Nellie!

Merry Christmas & Joy to you.

Thank you, Nellie. You are not evil: you are good.

Merry Christmas to all!

Nellie,

Thanks for the name-check - and such a nice one at that!

To all -

Here's wishing you a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2010!

Thanks for the shout-out, Nellie!

- Joel Schwartzberg

Just catching up with the Baristanet world after these four days! Great poetry Nellie, and thanks for including me! ;-)

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Whatever Hoiday You Celebrate to all of the Baristaneters!
