Lost Dog Discovered in Downtown Montclair

Friday, Jan 29, 2010 1:54pm  |  COMMENTS (14)

A concerned citizen sent just sent this to us:

There is a medium size, medium-light-colored dog roaming around Fullerton and Union avenues in Montclair He is super-friendly and looks to be well cared for, but he does not seem to have a good understanding of streets and cars. He is wearing a blue collar and a Montclair Township tag, but no identifying information.

If you are missing a dog or know to whom he belongs, please contact pets@baristanet.com.
UPDATE: Dog reunited with owner. “Herbie” apparently was a bad boy who ran outside before his owner could stop him.

Congratulations to Amy Edelman, author of “Manless in Montclair,” and a new publishing entrepreneur, for her write-up in New Jersey Monthly. Edelman has created a business indiereader.com that makes self-publishing sexy.
And while we’re giving out virtual high-fives, there’s a local kid musician who’ll be getting a lot of attention – at the Grammy’s. Read about it on Barista Kids.

Drop in at 7pm for conversation, light refreshments, and plenty of laughs!
Montclair Farmers’ Market Continues in Winter:
We just heard that a few of Montclair’s faithful vendors will continue to set up on Saturday mornings during these chilly months. Growers Tree-Licious Orchards (Ginger) and Vacchiano Farms (Anthony) – are planning to come to the Walnut Street Train Station every other Saturday, weather permitting. Anthony is there from 8:00 am – 12 noon; Ginger will be there from 10:000 am – 1:00 pm. Plan on seeing them this Saturday, January 30, “assuming the weather is reasonable for a drive with our truck”.
Ginger will have apples and cider this Saturday and every other Sat. through March, plus their popular doughnuts and other baked goods.
Anthony brings his locally-raised organic grass-fed beef, poultry, brown eggs, honey, fruit pies and pot pies, and more. For special orders call Anthony and Ginger at (908) 689-2227. Remember too, another Farmers’ Market vendor, The Organic Bread Company, is conveniently located on Walnut Street.

Help For Haiti: Lampa Clinic Update & Montclair Fundraising Success

Friday, Jan 29, 2010 10:23am  |  COMMENTS (5)

jim morgan.jpg
Dr. Jim Morgan, founder of Lamp For Haiti which funds a free health clinic in Port-au-Prince, has returned to Montclair after a week in the quake-ravaged slums of Haiti’s capital.
With all commercial flights into Haiti suspended, Morgan flew into Santo Domingo in the DR, where he connected with US AID personnel orchestrating transport to Haiti for medical personnel. Morgan and several other physicians were helicoptered into Port-au-Prince.
“We felt tremors everyday,” he says. “People were sleeping on mattresses outside.” Morgan says his trip had three objectives: to provide leadership and support for his staff, to maintain a presence in the community, and to re-open the clinic. Mission accomplished all around!
Cite Soleil, the slum where the clinic is located, is a dicey neighborhood, Morgan explained. “For two days after the quake, we had zero security. The UN peace keeping patrols had left the area to help out at the UN mission. My staff was threatened by poor locals who were feeling desperate.”
“I knew it was very important for me to help the clinic regroup – we couldn’t let our mission be turned around, and I knew security would come back. Of course, it didn’t hurt that I brought cash to pay salaries to the staff,” says Morgan.
One of the first tasks he tackled was bringing more water to the community, by paying to fix up an old American milk truck that could transport drinking water. “We paid the mechanic, driver, and bought the fuel.” Now there are two water trucks serving the neighborhood. Read a full account of his experiences on the Lamp For Haiti website.

New Show At MSU’s George Segal Gallery Well Worth The Trip

Friday, Jan 29, 2010 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (1)

I attended the opening talk and tour of ART Connections 6, the big new show at MSU’s George Segal Gallery. The show is up through February 13, and it is a must see. Art consultant and curator Patricia Selden discussed many aspects of choosing art as an investment; then she took a large group of us around the gallery to look at some of the beautiful pieces more closely. Some 115 arists were selected and 160 artworks were in the exhibition. The number of visitors to the opening broke records — 550 visitors. The exhibition will run through February 13th and all the art is for sale. Gallery hours are Tue. Wed. Fri.,Sat. 10-5., Thur. 12:30 to 7:30. (The photo shows curator Patricia Selden discussing art collecting tips, with sculptures by artist Burton Tysinger in the foreground.)

The Montclair Times is reporting that after the craziness at the 501 Club this past weekend, the club is no more. Where will events like this and this take place now? There was also a petition in place to get rid of the “sex club”.

Kudos to Glen Ridge police who remind you to zip it with this sign (placed southbound on Ridgewood Avenue approaching Belleville Avenue). About last night: What do you make of the show of purple at the State of the Union address? Did the fashion police send a memo to Barney up? Was Pelosi’s lilac, Michelle’s eggplant and Biden’s violet tie some kind of purplicious coincidence or do you go for the red plus blue bipartisanship theory? Your thoughts on SOTU, this morning’s snow job, the state funding for schools meeting in Montclair tonight, and anything and everything else — open thread time.
