For Sale: Montclair Victorian Gem Of A Home

Thursday, Jan 28, 2010 12:55pm  |  COMMENTS (14)

87 north mountain.jpg
If you’re a seasoned house hunter in Montclair, you know once you cross the threshold of a home in Montclair, you can be in for a big surprise. Such is the case at 87 North Mountain, a single family Victorian home – fully loaded – architecturally speaking.
This well-maintained seven-bedroom, four level home has plenty of curb appeal, but the eye candy is all in the details inside. Built in 1900, Montclair Mayor Ernest C. Hinck and his wife Helena were the first of five owners.
Current owners, Jon and Marion Randel, restored this home with meticulous detail to Victorian authenticity and the Art and Crafts details present from subsequent additions. Their passion garnered a Victorian Society Preservation Award for outstanding renovations. The home is listed with Adriana O’Toole, Montclair Realty for $1,132,600. Taxes are $29,957. The property includes a two-car garage, and a well lit basement walkout with a home office and a “mother-in-law suite” with bedroom, full bath, and private entrance. Bonus for gardening addicts: there’s an attached potting shed, lovely mature plantings and a “secret garden” on the flag-shaped lot which is nearly half an acre.
Bright and roomy, the home is resplendent with carved antique woodwork, original light fixtures, stained glass, parquet floors, multiple fireplaces and leaded glass cabinets lending a museum quality to the house, plus the coziness of a bed and breakfast. A word of caution: don’t be afraid of wallpaper. Keeping with the period, owners have invested a fortune in historically accurate wallpaper, often applied in layers, from Bradbury and Bradbury. The dining room has interesting patterns on walls and ceiling, in subdued jewel tones.
Don’t miss the open house at 87 North Mountain, Montclair, this Sunday, January 31, 2-4 pm. For listing info, and a virtual tour of this home, click here.

Helping Haiti: Goose Pinatas, Art, Haircuts, Brunch and Dinner

Thursday, Jan 28, 2010 12:00pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

Glen Ridge resident Amy Vecchione (shown here peeking out from behind pilot “Sully” Sullenberger) recently organized the one-year reunion for the passengers and crew who were part of the “Miracle on the Hudson.” As part of the celebration, she had a bunch of piñatas made in the shape of the geese that clogged the airliner’s engines. There are two left, signed by Sully and the rest of Flight 1549′s crew, being auctioned off on eBay, here and here. All the proceeds from the auctions, which end Friday, will go to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund, and will be matched by a donation from Grey Goose vodka. See one of the goose piñatas here.
Here are a bunch of upcoming local efforts to help Haiti; if you know of others, add to comments.
Reticents/Hat City Kitchen Help Haiti
A new restaurant, Hat City Kitchen, opens this weekend in Orange (The chef from the old Montclair restaurant, Yves, is the chef). The Reticents are playing there this Saturday, Jan. 30 and the restaurant will be donating all admissions proceeds to Haiti Relief. A tipster writes: Leslie West’s brother, Larry Weinstein, is the owner of HCK — might he show up after his Wellmont gig?
Small Works for a Big Cause: Artists Unite To Help Haiti
This Sunday, Jan 31., go to Brassworks Gallery (105 Grove, Montclair) from 2-5 p.m. and purchase any one of over 100 pieces of original art priced at $50! Many local artists and students have donated their work — this is your chance to own a small piece of art from an artist you admire and help Haiti. All proceeds will go to the relief effort of your choice: Doctors Without Borders, The Red Cross or Partners in Health. Live music, small bites and beverages; checks only (no cash or credit cards).
Have a heart — and schedule a haircut to help Haiti — in time for Valentine’s Day…

Thursday, Jan 28, 2010 8:19am  |  COMMENTS (23)

buckingham.jpgUPDATE: A tipster sends in the scene on Buckingham Road in Montclair where a three car accident occured this morning around 8:15. Three fender benders on North Mountain around 8:30 am near the Van Vleck. One SUV ran off the road into the yard of 87 North Mountain.
We just got word from Liz that conditions are mighty slick on local roads too, with plenty of fender benders and near-misses just on the way to drop kids off at school.
See anything, send us a picture.
Warning galore from those who’ve braved the morning snows to take Decamp into town. Clever Commuters are advising their fellow commuters to take the train. But they’re also reporting some clever bus drivers have found a nice alternate route by driving up the GSP to Rt. 80. And they’re giving bus drivers a mouthful about Clever Commute. Here’s how it looks in my in box.

Give ‘Em the Old College Try T

Wednesday, Jan 27, 2010 3:58pm  |  COMMENTS (4)

steve peifer.jpgI got an unusual request the other day from college consultant Marcia Kramer.

I have a colleague in Kenya working at the Rift Valley Academy. He also works at a number of local schools as well. He is trying to encourage his students to attend colleges and universities in the U.S. To this end he is asking for any t-shirts with college names/logos. I am collecting t-shirts with any college name and logo and will send him a package. If you have t-shirts that have college names and logos and you are done with them (I will also take banners, sweatpants, etc.) please pass them on to me.

Turns out Kramer’s colleague, Steve Peifer, is also a recipient of CNN’s 2007 Hero Award. You can read more about his organization, Kenya Kids Can!, here.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
