Valentine Celebrations: Old Fangled to New Age

File:Esther Howland 1850.jpegLet’s face it, if you wait to the last minute, you’re going to be scrounging around the candy aisle at CVS or picking up a bouquet of roses from the Exxon station. If you want to surprise your sweetie with something really different, here are two unusual options in Baristaville this season.
Over at Van Vleck, on Friday Feb. 12 and Saturday Feb. 13, you can see a “parlor reading” of an original play by Glen Ridge playwright Nadine Bernard about Esther Howland, the Mount Holyoke-educated entrepreneuse, who kick-started the whole business of sending Valentines in this country. The performances start at 7:30 pm and cost $10. Harpist Odarka Stockert will also perform and The Chocolate Path in Montclair is donating truffles.
Parlor reading not your style? How about a Valentine Special Acupuncture Happy Hour?

What’s got you excited? Here’s your open thread for stories in and out of Baristaville.
UPDATE: It’s a great big oversized iPhone called an iPad. Awful name. Event video here.

Who Wants to Buy a Senior Center? The Open House

Wednesday, Jan 27, 2010 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (17)

SeniorCtr.jpgMontclair gadfly Pegi Adam got the town to vote last fall on whether to have an elected school board. Now she has a new issue: the town’s proposed purchase of a senior center on Greenwood Ave. “Montclair should not be in the real estate speculation business,” she says. She’s rallying her troops on the Montclair Watercooler and through her email list.
Adam’s comment about the “real estate speculation business” comes just a day after the township announced a very real-estate like “open house” of the property this coming Saturday, Jan. 30, from 9 to 1, so people in Montclair can see what they might be buying. The address is 110 Greenwood Ave.

Police Activity: More Smashed Windows, Burglary

Tuesday, Jan 26, 2010 12:00pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

Bloomfield: This past Sunday (Jan. 24), an Alva Street resident reported he heard someone break into his house while he was sleeping. When the resident went to check, he saw an approximately six-foot-tall black male, between 30-40 years old with a thin mustache in his apartment. The resident chased the suspect downstairs and then south on Edison Street. The suspect got away.
Between Jan. 18-21, there were five reports of smashed car windows and theft in Bloomfield. On Jan. 18, two cars were broken into on Berkley Avenue and ransacked, but neither car owner reported anything missing. Two similar incidents occurred on Broad Street and East Passaic Avenue. On Jan. 21, a car was broken into on Sadler Road and a jacket was reported stolen from the trunk.
Glen Ridge: Police were called to a business on Bloomfield Ave. on Jan. 24 to arrest a man after the storeowner reported he repeatedly had asked the man to leave on several occasions and to never return. The suspect, a Bloomfield resident, was arrested for defiant trespassing and disorderly conduct; he also had a warrant from Bloomfield and was released later that day without bail.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
