Bloomfield Meets New Administrator Fred Carr

Monday, Jan 25, 2010 4:00pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

bloomfield2-1.jpg(Adds comments from Geoff Gove, who attended the event)
Bloomfield met and greeted its new township administrator Frederick C. Carr on Jan. 23, when he was special guest speaker at a meeting of the Bloomfield Neighborhood Associations Committee (BNAC).
At the session, Carr outlined his priorities for the year and entertained questions from the public between 10:00 a.m. and noon at Bloomfield College, on the corner of Liberty and Oakland Streets.
Carr previously held administrator positions in Matawan and Cranbury and brings a wealth of leadership experience to Bloomfield. The decision to hire him was announced in November.
bloomfield1.jpgHe graduated from West Point and later became an Army Ranger, a title earned by those who undergo months of grueling physical and psychological training. He married a fellow Army officer, Janice, his wife of 27 years, and retired from the Army as a captain after serving in the first Gulf War.
Geoff Gove, a regular contributor to Baristanet and a blogger on green issues, attended the meeting and said that Carr “spent much of the time explaining why this year’s $4 million shortfall necessitated a hiring freeze in December.”
Despite the freeze, exceptions have been made. For example, Carr was legally required to fill vacant crossing guard positions to avoid moving police offers into their slots.

Tree Experts to Talk on Brookdale Park Restoration

Monday, Jan 25, 2010 3:00pm  |  COMMENTS (12)

Brookdale Park.trees.jpgTwo certified tree experts who are familiar with Brookdale Park will discuss the benefits of tree inventory, current conditions in the park and steps for the future, on Tuesday (Jan. 26) at the Brookdale Reformed Church, at 7:30 pm.
Take the Park’s survey here. Information gathered from the survey will be used to help make the park greener, cleaner and safer.
Steve Schuckman, consulting forester for Bloomfield, Montclair and Glen Ridge and private consultant to planning and zoning boards, and Paul Jordon, an arborist and municipal specialist with 30 years’ experience, will discuss the dynamics of a tree inventory, how to manage that inventory, the reality of putting those steps to practice, along with ongoing work at Verona Park.
The discussion is aimed at finding out if the Brookdale Park Conservancy’s 2010 board is ready to undertake such a project, and if they are, to work towards a plan for BPC member participation in restoring and maintaining Brookdale Park’s trees.

501 Club Jersey Shore Shenanigans Ends With Arrests, Questions

Monday, Jan 25, 2010 2:00pm  |  COMMENTS (29)

The chaos generated by the throngs of fans who braved the cold to attend a Jersey Shore cast appearance at the 501 Club on Saturday night attracted coverage from The Star Ledger, who picked up our video, as well as from CBS and TMZ. The latter reports that a source inside the club said cast members had to be hidden away in a closet while the overcrowded club was cleared out.
Crowds spilling out of the packed club resulted in police and fire dept. presence on Bloomfield Ave. and a street closure in front of the club that lasted two hours. Fights led to four arrests for disorderly contact and drunk driving. This latest incident at 501 has brought more attention to the new club and its troubled and controversial history.
Dick Grabowsky, who owns both the building that houses the 501 Club and the liquor license in use, distanced himself from Friday’s hullabaloo, saying here that he didn’t have a relationship with 501′s operators. According to Evelyn Ostella, Montclair’s deputy clerk, the liquor license transferred to Dick Grabowsky from the former Rascals, remains in his name with no transfers or changes to the license, or notice to the clerk’s office of any additional shareholders who would be entitled to use the license. This morning, a spokesperson for the ABC would neither confirm nor deny investigations into the 501 Club, despite what appears to be a mention of an investigation here.
Around the time some 2000 or so fans, including many Snook-alikes, crowded Bloomfield Ave. warranting a need for police to manage the overflow from the club that has a capacity for 800, Grabowsky and many town council members were toasting outgoing town manager Joe Hartnett at a $50-a-plate farewell dinner in West Orange. Chief Sabagh was called away from the dinner to deal with the chaos; our calls today for additional information have not yet been returned.
