Let’s face it, if you wait to the last minute, you’re going to be scrounging around the candy aisle at CVS or picking up a bouquet of roses from the Exxon station. If you want to surprise your sweetie with something really different, here are two unusual options in Baristaville this season.
Over at Van Vleck, on Friday Feb. 12 and Saturday Feb. 13, you can see a “parlor reading” of an original play by Glen Ridge playwright Nadine Bernard about Esther Howland, the Mount Holyoke-educated entrepreneuse, who kick-started the whole business of sending Valentines in this country. The performances start at 7:30 pm and cost $10. Harpist Odarka Stockert will also perform and The Chocolate Path in Montclair is donating truffles.
Parlor reading not your style? How about a Valentine Special Acupuncture Happy Hour?
Acupuncture Happy Hour is a great and natural way to RELIEVE THE STRESS of your life. Unwind at the end of the week and for the price of a couple of drinks, you can have a relaxing and uplifting stress reduction experience to start your weekend.
You will lie down or sit on a chair in the yoga studio in your clothing. The treatments at Acupuncture Happy Hour involve acupuncture points that are located on the head and ears. These are some of the most highly effective points for liberating endorphins, the “feel good hormones”. Your body naturally releases them during the treatment to influence the immune, hormonal and emotional systems. This is a great way to experience acupuncture. Bring a friend. If you have never tried Acupuncture, this is a great introduction.
An alcohol-free, body balancing, stress reduction experience in a communal setting at an affordable price. Refreshments will follow in the lounge area.
The acupuncture happy hour takes place Friday Feb. 12 from 5 to 7 pm. Pre-registered: $20 per person for an hour treatment; $35 for a couple. Walk in: $25. Register here.
Disclosure: Acupuncturist Noel Nowicki is a friend.

Needling for V-day? If my sweetie gets me acupuncture for V-day he’ll find himself without a sweetie for other more traditional V-day celebrations.
Stop needling us about Valentine’s Day!
I stopped reading after “alcohol-free..”
“….about Esther Howland, the Mount Holyoke-educated entrepreneuse, who kick-started the whole business of sending Valentines in this country”
Now I know who’s name to curse.
Try getting a table in a decent restaurant on V day. It ain’t easy.
My sweetie will get some Godiva chocolate, Hoboken Train Station flowers and a 30 – 45 minute foot massage – depending on how much bliss she can tolerate. I gave a ‘certificate book’ for three, one hour foot massages to my nephew, who lives with us, is a personal trainer – on his feet all day. I think he’s already redeemed at least four massages…
Howard Stern and Robin Quivers used to rave about a woman in NYC who specialized in foot massages and got $150 hour… Hmmmmmnnnn…
There’s a Facebook fan page for the play, called “Miss Valentine” that contains photos of the cast…
