Northern NJ was spared the massive snow storm that blanketed the state further south over the weekend and wreaked havoc on power lines, but it's time to get the salt and shovels out. A winter storm warning is in effect for Essex County, and weather officials are expecting a "significant" amount of snow to make landfall between late Tuesday (Feb. 9) and through Wednesday. The warning is in effect until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday.
About 8 to 13 inches of snow is expected, with those in the NY metropolitan area and Long Island likely to be shoveling more than others.
Snow will fall from late Tuesday evening, at times becoming heavy on Wednesday before tapering off later that night, according to the National Weather Service. The temperature will peak at 37F on Tuesday, and drop to 25F at night, with a high of 32F on Wednesday.
Those venturing out on Wednesday will face other elements, too, in the way of wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph, which will cause drifts of snow, near-blizzard conditions and raise the possibility of power outages. Such strong winds can make driving difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles, and drivers are advised to be cautious, the NWS said.
The NWS advised travel only in an emergency, and that those who have to travel should carry an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency.

There's no drinking like snow drinking.
I need to tip my hat off to Montclair's snow removal team.... they do a great job removing snow quickly, even on my dead end street!
-bag of salt....check
-test run the snowblower..check
-ensure car has blankets and full tank... check
-fridge stocked with non-perishable goods...check
-fireplace logs in caddy....check
just waiting patiently for the snow!
dynasty,
Take the 'non-perishables' out of the fridge immediately!! You'll need the space for beer.
We're stocking up on Edy's Lemonade ice pops, Raisin Bran Crunch, Jarlsberg cheese and Coke Zero.
My nephew should be filling up the firewood hoop on the porch today. Nothing like a good fire while the snow is blowing sideways and the wind rattles the window frames.
The little sparrows will huddle together in my evergreens and the Coopers Hawk will stalk them in those same evergreens. The bird feeder hidden in the hedges is always full ensuring a constant supply of food, not for the sparrows and pigeons but the crafty hawk that bursts from concealment to grab them with it's iron talons.
Horse puckey. Kids, pack that backpack on Tuesday night and get some sleep: you will awake as normal on Wednesday to a gloriously uneventful grey day. Your uncle walleroo is predicting NO SNOW.
On the radio, I listened to the humorous commercial for a local news team. The anchors seemed to be talking lightly about how we missed the storm, despite the overwhelming forecasts otherwise. Then the weatherman comes on with a lead on catch phrase- "you can count on 'X'", and saying "um, this time we are definitely serious, its really gonna snow, so now go get those french toast ingredients ASAP from your local supermarket"
Banner Chemical has rock salt, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and various icemelter blends in stock.

Bernadette/Baristas, can you please provide a link to the site where the map image came from? I'd like to see that full size. Thanks.
i already have a "honeydo" list to get done at home tomorrow....truthfully, id rather be at work.
regrouting the bathroom tiles is by no means as much fun as sitting in a 7'X10' office with no windows, glued to the computer all day.
.....btw. fridge is overflowing with libations from the superbowl party. should make grouting fun.
Call the Montclair Superintendant's Office 973-509-4010 and go on record that it would be SMART to cancel school TODAY (like NYC just did), so as not to BLAST people out of their beds at 5:30am to tell them they can sleep. Flood the place with calls!
Yes, MeMyself&I, why wait until tomorrow morning to inform everyone. Tell everyone today so they can sleep in (fat chance with kids, of course!) or arrange babysitting up front if they need to get to work. This storm seems pretty certain unlike the last one. Hopefully, they will make the decision this afternoon.
Unfortunately for me, being snowed in will just mean working with a laptop and cell phone on the futon instead of in my office.
But, at least I'll get to have lunch with the wife and baby. :-)
