Naomi Ruth Sims (1948-2009) was America’s first African-American supermodel, an entrepreneur, and author. She died of breast cancer in Newark last year. Montclair auction house Nye & Co. will host a charity auction of select items from her estate, this Saturday, Feb. 27, at 2 pm.
Sims’ personal belongings, presented in four lots, are expected to sell for $50 to $1,500. Auction house owner Kathy Nye was gushing over a huge baroque mahogany-inlaid wardrobe from Germany, and a scarlet red fainting couch. The Sims collection also includes beaded gowns, many big pieces of vintage Mary McFadden and Elsa Peretti bling, a Louis Vuitton travel and makeup case, African tribal jewelry, art and eclectic artifacts from all over the world. You can see it all on display today at Nye & Company’s showroom, 425 Bloomfield Avenue. Or if you prefer, preview it this Friday, Feb. 26 at a Wine & Cheese Reception honoring Ms. Sims. We’ve been advised there may be some celebrity sightings…
