New Dorm Plans for MSU

Monday, February 8, 2010

newdorm.jpgMontclair State University will start construction on two new student-housing units by the Recreation Center this spring.

This will be the first new construction project under the New Jersey Economic Stimulus Act of 2009, signed by former Gov. Jon Corzine this past August. The bill allowed public universities to hire private contractors to build on campus.

According to The Montclarion, MSU was recently planning off-campus housing in downtown Montclair, but since the stimulus bill was signed, plans were canceled. Capstone Development Cooperation, who was going to build the dorms in Montclair, will now be building the new on-campus dorms.

The new dorms will hold 2,000 beds for freshman and sophomore students.

Construction is anticipated to be complete by August 2011.

At this rate, MSU (my dear school) will be NOTHING but buildings. You can leap from roof to roof from Normal Ave. to Rt. 46.

Walking through campus recently, I was surprised how much PAVEMENT was there.

It was never a grass filled campus, but they have really Paved Paradise and put up a parking lot.

"The new dorms will hold 2,000 beds..."

And how many people do they plan to house there?

When the shrilly anti-intellectual Sarah Palin cues up to addresses a college crowd, lured by the speaking fee, I will relish the irony.

She might like the freshly tarred parking lots you grieve over, Mr.Professor. Exxon will most likely be her main contributor when she runs for Commanderess in Chief.

Nonetheless, how hands-across-the-aisle of you to invoke a vintage birkenstock and granola Joni Mitchell tune in your post!

Kudos to the prof and his stirring bipartisanship.

Spiro,

To your broad strokes are wearing thin. Right. Folks in the center cannot care about whether or not a college in it's race to build may be forgetting that grass and trees are important. Right.

And you can go on about Mrs. Palin all you want.

But I bet she knows how to pronounce CORPSMAN.

However, when you read whatever is put on the teleprompter- letter by letter, you might make the mistake (3 times) of pronouncing the "P" like our Commander-in-Chief did. Of course this was not a big issue because 1) Obama, the Constitutional Scholar (still waiting for that evidence) is the most brilliant man to ever live, and 2) Obama being his dumb self, does not fit the narrative.

But for you, Palin dumb does fit the narrative.

Or if your Spiro, in your corner, the narrative IS the truth!

Not really, Prof.

I don't pretend that my narrative is the truth. Never have. Never will. You speculate as recklessly as a Sun Belt home builder.

As the Talmud says "Never be sure of yourself till the day you die". Sarah Palin obviously does not read the Talmud. Neither do you.

,,come to think of it, I avoid the Talmud myself. It's against my religion.

Capstone very much wanted to build in downtown Montclair. The problem was Montclair's representatives. They asked the evil developer for concession after concession. In a bad economy there are fewer resources to build projects than projects. After one two many demands by Montclair, the developer said "bye, I have a better deal elsewhere." And they went elsewhere and will not return, even if Montclair's concession demands are retracted.
Now the plan is to spend the never ending supply of taxpayer money to develop the abandon portions of Bloomfield Avenue.
Raise taxes for a Senior Center that is only wanted for municipal office space and to justify more municipal employees; and now we can hire more planners for Bloomfield Avenue. It's a glorious day! More jobs for the friends and family of our municipal leaders.
(and bike lockers too!)

However, when you read whatever is put on the teleprompter- letter by letter

Well, that's better than having to write notes on your hand, isn't it.?

The most hilarious thing about it is, there's a crossout!

ha ha ha. Please run, Sarah, please.

By the way prof, still think Fox News is 'mostly independents'? Seems like you forgot to continue posting in that thread last week.

Actually, Mike, I found the Palin-writing-her-notes-on -her -hand-to-talk-cogently-to-the-Tea-Partiers news item pretty funny.

I guess the teleprompter concept is okay if it's ink on skin rather than some electronic contraption. Sort of like a Real America teleprompter.

The funny (and infuriating) thing about Sarah Palin writing on her hand is not so much that she needed notes. It's what she needed notes for. She had to cheat when the moderator asked her what her top three priorities are. Uh, shouldn't she know that without crib notes? And she knew the questions in advance!!

It's also funny that she blasted Obama for using teleprompters when she couldn't go one sentence without looking down at her notes. Reading a speech off a teleprompter and reading it off a piece of paper -- what's the difference?

"I don't pretend that my narrative is the truth. Never have. Never will"

af'nmen

VP moron is as VP moron does, Albert G. Biden

I don't criticize anyone for using a teleprompter--or notes (OK, notes on the hand is a bit much). Of course, if a reminder vehicle is used to provide an answer to a simple question like "How much is 2 plus 2," that would demonstrate a cognition problem, but for a long speech that would be tough to memorize, why not? In the past, when speaking in front of a group for business reasons, I always kept note cards handy.

It's one thing having notes saying who is the leader of this nation or what date some bill was adopted, but a presidential hopeful should be able to answer "What are your top three priorities for the country?" without having to write "tax cuts" and "lift American spirit" on her hand.

So, if the gray building is Blanton, and that center building is the Rec Center...it looks like one can easily peer into the swimming pool from their dorm room window!

And I'm pretty sure I can see the Children's Center off to the side. Just how crowded are they going to make this campus?

Professor - Your alma mater is "nothing but buildings" already. There certainly isn't any notable academic work being done there. It has become a big public employment project.

Spec, saying it's so don't make it. MSU has done very nicely in recent school rankings. But by the tone of your comment, I'm sure facts don't really matter to you.

Mike, I made my point the other day. Perhaps you should go back and read it.

A few words on ones hand, versus a teleprompter for EVERY speaking engagement... Yep. Those are about equal....

And what of Mr. Conlaw Scholar's inability to know how to pronounce CORPSMEN??

Nothing, huh?

And remind me, Sarah Palin was elected to what? Oh, right. She's a private citizen. One that you continue use to prove your point, despite the fact she's just a citizen.

I criticize the President and you go after a once Governor.

Why does she scare you so much?

Is it the pretty face and heels? Is it that you know she'd never pay any attention to you and now you can show her?

But Mike & Spiro. I'm bored with you guys. So forgive me if I comment less frequently in regard to YOUR points, but I feel like I can almost write your stuff for you (though I'd have to work to be as witless as you both).

So go ahead, blame the world on FOXNEWS, PALIN, et. al.

You win.

Why does she scare you so much?

SHE doesn't scare me. She's a blithering idiot.

What scares me is that a blithering idiot who needs notes to tell her to honor the American spirit is showered with attention from the media and the GOP.

A country that will elect an actor who starred in movies with monkeys will elect anyone. That's what scares me.

I think an interesting point was missed in all these (unrelated) shenanigans on Sarah Palin.

From the original Montclairion article:
"The university will, technically, be leasing the land to Capstone, and students will have to pay rent directly to them."

They never had those kind of arrangements when I was in school. I fear the school/students might resent this sometime down the road.

Mike, I made my point the other day. Perhaps you should go back and read it.

All I read was you saying that 'independents' watch Fox News and I showed that they didn't. What point?

And what of Mr. Conlaw Scholar's inability to know how to pronounce CORPSMEN??

Harvard. Columbia. But yeah, he's dumb. In any case, I can see how him mispronouncing something could really affect the way he governs, or his policies. Or not.

She's a private citizen.

Oh please, this is a two year campaign trip and everyone knows it. Palin would set herself on fire to get attention if she had too. But hey, I want her to run.

Why does she scare you so much?

While I believe her chances of getting elected a are million to one, that one scares me because she's an idiot. Those important points she had to write on her hand? "Lift American Spirit, Energy, and Tax Cuts." It sounds like an eighth grader running for student government.

I'm bored with you guys. So forgive me if I comment less frequently in regard to YOUR points

I'm sure I'll find a way to go on. I can watch Fox News to get the same (incorrect) points you attempt to make here anyway.

I've heard that MSU was so strapped for dorm space that they were housing students in motels on Rt. 46. By the looks of the rendering, the dorms have some aesthetic, as well as practical appeal. Not trying to insult anyone, but that is one ugly, poorly designed campus. I never understood the point of building student housing miles away from campus either, especially for undergrads. We need to spruce up downtown Montclair, but no one can say that dormitory housing is anything close to a highest and best use for properties in the heart of our commercial district.

Oh, and Sarah Palin is a blithering idiot. I'm fiscally conservative and socially liberal, and I just don't get what this woman has to offer.

Funny I thought this posting was about new dorms at MSU and it turns into a silly argument. If we think about what will be happening to the community of Little Falls and forget the other garbage you may come to realize that there will be an additional 2 thousand cars coming through the towships of Little Falls, Clifton and Montclair. I don't believe freshman can have cars on campus but some day they might become sophmores.

The most interesting part of this blog is that MSU is leasing the land to the developer. So what they take from Little Falls through emminent domain they can now charge someone else to use. And if this is a non university transaction I think they should pay real estate and use taxes to Little Falls to cover the cost of the fire department and police coverage.

Of all the options for using notes or technology to help you through a speech, at what point is writing on your HAND a good idea? If the president of my company did that, I would start looking for another job. Totally unprofessional.
