Blizzard Day Two: Cabin Fever

Friday, Feb 26, 2010 9:37am  |  COMMENTS (11)

UPDATE: Montclair YMCA will be closed all day today.
Well, I’m completely out of firewood, which is my favorite snowy day pastime, so I guess I’ll just have to write snow stories all day to amuse myself. Even virtue is postponed; the Montclair YMCA doesn’t expect to be open until at least noon. Last night, I asked members of Baristanet’s Facebook page for their best snow-day diversions, and we got lots of suggestions. The most original, submitted by Bridgit Burton Brown, was creating a summertime BBQ right in your own living room.

During the last storm, I (literally) turned up the heat a bit, pulled out the sundresses, shorts and flip flops, dusted off the indoor grill and BBQd hot dogs & corn on the cob, made lemonade slushies, cut veggie fries (ie celery and carrot sticks) with homemade blue cheese dressing, put a blanket on the floor turned on Caliente on xm and had a “summer” picnic… BTW: no comments on the heat thing. :) …my kids were quick to let me know that I was using more energy than needed (my lessons came back to bite me), so we only indulged for a short while…but it was fun while it lasted… and we beat the snow day blues!

falllen tree on norman2.jpg
A tipster sends this photo of a fallen tree on Norman Road in Upper Montclair (it came down after midnight; earlier another tree had fallen on Clinton Ave and another at Anderson Park.) and the message “No injuries — thank goodness. Be safe everyone!!!”
His message is the heads up for the day — DeCamp and NJ Transit are suspending bus service as of this post (that could change later today); NJ Transit is running some trains according to Clever Commuters, but they are running late and there was a temporary suspension around 6:20 due to power problems.
The takeaway? Stay home if you can. Send your fallen tree photos and other snow havoc to tips.
UPDATE From the Clever Commute “Command Center:

The 7:38 Watchung train to NY Penn is canceled per NJT announcement.
Riders are to take next Hoboken bound train and transfer at Newark Broad Street.
==> HEADS UP: – - Eastbound trains will arrive on
westbound track.(at least at Watchung)

See yesterday’s fallen trees in Anderson Park and Clinton Road, and a close-up of the Norman Road tree, after the jump.

Montclair Police Lieutenant Scott Buehler sends the following details on this morning’s robbery of a TD Bank:

At approximately 10:15 AM, police responded to the TD Bank at 233 Bloomfield Avenue on a report of a robbery. Upon arrival, police spoke to the teller, who stated that he had just finished a transaction with a customer making a deposit when an unidentified male approached the teller’s station and mumbled words that the teller did not hear. He then reached across the teller’s station and snatched money left on the teller’s side of the counter, some of which had just been left for deposit by the previous customer. The suspect then fled the bank and was last seen on Grove Street in the area of the Lackawanna Plaza shopping center. It is believed that the proceeds of the robbery totalled approximately $11,000. The suspect did not produce a weapon or a note at any time during the incident. No one was injured as a result of the robbery.

Montclair Police Blotter: Taxi Driver Attacked and Purse Snatchers

Thursday, Feb 25, 2010 2:00pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

February 16: A taxi driver reported he was hit with a baseball bat by two customers after opening the door for them. The driver reported picking up a male and a female outside of Pathmark around 9 p.m. The couple asked to be taken to New Street. The male began to start smoking in the taxi. The driver asked him to stop because of his allergies at which time the male asked to get out of the taxi. The taxi driver pulled over at the intersection of Elm and Union Streets and opened the door for the passengers. The male then hit him with a baseball bat, making contact with the right side of the driver’s face. The male and female ran off and the driver got back in his taxi and tried to follow them but lost sight of them near New and Washington Streets.
The male is described to be about 30-years-old, black with dark skin, about 5’5, wearing a black jacket and black jeans. The female was described as black but no other description given. When police responded to take the report, an officer noticed some swelling around the right side of the driver’s cheekbone area.
Watch your purse:
A woman reported that her purse was stolen outside of the Clairidge movie theater on Feb. 21 when she put it down to help her husband who is in a wheel chair. Another woman had her purse stolen on Feb. 20 while she was eating at the South Park Bar and Grill.
