Warning Of Layoffs/Furloughs In Montclair

Thursday, Feb 25, 2010 11:00am  |  COMMENTS (84)

Last Friday, Montclair township employees received a notice saying layoffs and furloughs may be necessary in 2010. The notice, attached to paychecks, came from town manager Marc Dashield.
Dashield told Baristanet the purpose of the notice was to let employees know sooner rather than later about the possibility of layoffs, and to be in timely compliance with notification requirements as stated in the labor contracts.
“As we enter budget season we are facing a $2 million revenue shortfall. Although no decisions have been made yet, it is prudent to let employees know early, to maximize savings with the least impact on employees,” says Dashield.
He explains that the sooner in the budget year layoffs take place, the fewer employees would be affected in order to achieve the necessary budget savings. “The longer you wait [to initiate layoffs], the more people could be impacted.”

Update: Financing this fundraiser, after the jump.
I’ve been to quite a few wine pairing dinners, and I’ve been to a couple of beer pairing events, but a Cru vs. Brew?
Amanti Vino owner Sharon Sevrens wanted to put together “the wine and beer event of the year,” so she’s called in the big guns to keep our favorite Top Chef company at a Wine and Beer Competition Dinner – open to the public on March 23. Ariane Duarte of CulinAriane has composed a stellar menu that complements both wine and beer.
Pouring the brew, is Brooklyn Brewery’s Brewmaster Garrett Oliver; tipping the “cru” is Fred Dexheimer, one of 168 professional wine dudes worldwide who has risen to the ranks of Master Sommelier.
Dexheimer and Oliver will pit their respective expertise against each other alongside Ariane Duarte’s amazing gastronomical line-up.
The theme of this event is a competition…Fred and Garrett are selecting a wine (from Amanti Vino) and beer (from Brooklyn Brewery) to pair with each of the chef’s challenging, mouth watering courses described below.
At the conclusion of each course, a panel of judges will evaluate the success of Fred and Garrett’s pairings and select a winner. Sevren will also poll the audience after each course and will include their vote in the tabulation.

Where To Put Fido When You’re Selling Your House

Wednesday, Feb 24, 2010 2:30pm  |  COMMENTS (6)

To you, the pet owner, he’s your cute doggy or sweet kitty, but to a potential homebuyer, it could mean an allergy attack waiting to happen, paw prints on pant legs, or an unpleasant odor.
If you are planning to put your house on the market, you eliminate clutter, do any necessary repairs, and have the house looking its absolute best. But what steps do you take if you are a pet owner?
“Remove all pets for the open house, and when the house is being shown,” advised Lynne Oliver of Prudential Zinn Real Estate in Montclair. Oliver said that prospective buyers who are afraid of dogs might not come into a house with a dog, even if he is crated. And she says that litter boxes are a definite turnoff.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
