Naomi Ruth Sims (1948-2009) was America’s first African-American supermodel, an entrepreneur, and author. She died of breast cancer in Newark last year. Montclair auction house Nye & Co. will host a charity auction of select items from her estate, this Saturday, Feb. 27, at 2 pm.
Sims’ personal belongings, presented in four lots, are expected to sell for $50 to $1,500. Auction house owner Kathy Nye was gushing over a huge baroque mahogany-inlaid wardrobe from Germany, and a scarlet red fainting couch. The Sims collection also includes beaded gowns, many big pieces of vintage Mary McFadden and Elsa Peretti bling, a Louis Vuitton travel and makeup case, African tribal jewelry, art and eclectic artifacts from all over the world. You can see it all on display today at Nye & Company’s showroom, 425 Bloomfield Avenue. Or if you prefer, preview it this Friday, Feb. 26 at a Wine & Cheese Reception honoring Ms. Sims. We’ve been advised there may be some celebrity sightings…
Browse through the auction catalog online, here.
Preview and Reception: Friday, February 26, 5 – 8 pm.
Charity Auction: Saturday, February 27, 2 pm. to benefit Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.

Bloomfield Century 21 Realtor, Geoff Gove, looks at the numbers…From EcoRealty.com.

The typical American family, who makes the nation’s median income of $64,000 a year, could afford to buy 70.8% of all homes sold in the United States during the last three months of 2009. By comparison, only 55% were affordable in the second quarter of 2008.
The National Association of Home Builders judges a home to be affordable if a family making the median income could devote no more than 28% of their take-home pay toward housing costs.
There was a huge variation in affordability around the nation. All five of the most affordable major housing markets were in the Rust Belt, led by Indianapolis, which has been the nation’s most affordable major metro area for more than four years. More than 95% of all home sold there were classed as within the budget. Detroit was the second most affordable major market with 93.4%. The least affordable city? New York, at 20%.

Gove says our local market, though, seems to have bucked the trend. “Montclair is a world unto itself and is surviving well. New Jersey is tenth in the country for susceptibility to foreclosures – our proximity to New York City has helped us hold our value better than other states.”

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
