Back in the second half of the 19th-century, cows roamed Glen Ridge and sometimes nibbled at people’s gardens and secession talk filled the air. But the secession being talked about had nothing to do with the Confederacy or the Civil War. It was Glen Ridge’s desire to secede from Bloomfield, which it ultimately did in 1895.
This Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 8 pm, the Gas Lamp Players, in conjunction with the Glen Ridge Historical Society, will present a staged reading of letters and diaries written by Glen Ridge residents between 1860 and 1895, when secession occurred.
The material was adapted and directed by Jessica Sporn and stars Greg Cancro, Teri Furr, Lyn Hanson, Daniel Shaw, David Shaw and Sharon Smolen. The performance, which is free, will be held at the Women’s Club of Glen Ridge, 219 Ridgewood Ave.
