Dear Friend, Reminiscences from Old Glen Ridge

Tuesday, Feb 23, 2010 10:25am  |  COMMENTS (15)

GR boro election.jpgBack in the second half of the 19th-century, cows roamed Glen Ridge and sometimes nibbled at people’s gardens and secession talk filled the air. But the secession being talked about had nothing to do with the Confederacy or the Civil War. It was Glen Ridge’s desire to secede from Bloomfield, which it ultimately did in 1895.
This Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 8 pm, the Gas Lamp Players, in conjunction with the Glen Ridge Historical Society, will present a staged reading of letters and diaries written by Glen Ridge residents between 1860 and 1895, when secession occurred.
The material was adapted and directed by Jessica Sporn and stars Greg Cancro, Teri Furr, Lyn Hanson, Daniel Shaw, David Shaw and Sharon Smolen. The performance, which is free, will be held at the Women’s Club of Glen Ridge, 219 Ridgewood Ave.

Bloomfield BoE Meets Tuesday at Watsessing School

Monday, Feb 22, 2010 3:00pm  |  COMMENTS (5)

Bloomfield’s school district will hold a regular board meeting Tuesday night (Feb. 23) at 7:00pm. The meeting will be at Watsessing Elementary School, in a bid to attract more public attendance.
Attendees will want to know what will be happening with the school budget, in the wake of Gov. Chris Christie’s announcement recently that further funding to NJ public schools has been put on hold this year. The Bloomfield school board’s website boasts the fact that Bloomfield’s school budget spending ranks among the lowest of 105 similarly sized districts.
A topic that could be raised is the upcoming vote on March 9 on proposed improvements to Foley Field. Based on a safety review, it was recommended that the concrete stands be demolished. An all-weather turf and running track will be installed.
The board said it had picked the lowest-cost responsible design, worth a total of $2.9 million, for the Field’s makeover. It plans to issue notes of exactly this amount, payable over five years, and said the tax impact of these notes on a home with an average assessed value of $298,313 won’t exceed $42.49 per year over those five years, after which the notes will be completely paid off.
There will be an additional board meeting on March 30, for a public hearing on the budget, according to the meeting’s official agenda.

(Adds new details in second paragraph)
A teenage schoolgirl who was knocked down by a vehicle at Watchung Ave and Midland Ave, near The Pie Store, on Monday morning, was taken to hospital and then released, Montclair traffic police said.
Lt. Kenneth Miscia said on Tuesday that the accident was still being investigated and no further details were immediately available. The driver of the vehicle involved has been issued a summons, he said.
Witnesses and readers had written in to enquire about this young woman and said that at least three police cars had responded to the site of the accident.
Said one reader who emailed Baristanet, “This is a very dangerous part of Watchung Ave – people drive at 45 mph and it’s surprising this hasn’t happened before.”

I captured this image of Glenwood Avenue in Bloomfield in early February. The demolition equipment is gone now. Will the rebuilding ever begin?

Who Clears Roadkill?

Monday, Feb 22, 2010 11:00am  |  COMMENTS (25)

raccoon.jpgGoing about our Sunday activities, we came across a recently deceased raccoon on the road. It stayed there from morning till around midday, at Montclair and Watchung Avenues, until a resident couldn’t take it anymore and, ignoring the collective warnings of millions of parents about germs, disease and dead animals, decided to take matters into her own hands.
With the weather warming up, albeit taking its time to do so, there could be more such discoveries as recently awakened former-hibernators get reacquainted with our streets. Indeed, a phone call to Montclair Township to inquire about reporting road kill yielded the fact that there had been two such reports already this morning.
To give roadkill a dignified removal and burial, call Animal Control at 973.744.8600. While the animal control page on the town’s website doesn’t specifically mention deceased wild animals, town staff said all deceased animals on town property will be removed.
Meanwhile, if your offspring have a penchant for the grubby and you don’t, get them to play the Pluggabug game.

Montclair Resident, Chavis, is Subject of New Film

Monday, Feb 22, 2010 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (1)

A new film, Blood Done Sign My Name, released Feb. 19 nationwide, has as its subject Benjamin Chavis, Jr., a civil rights leader who has lived in Montclair for the past three decades.
The film tells the true story of the killing, in 1970, of a young, black Vietnam war veteran in North Carolina by a white business owner and his son, the racial tensions and riots which followed the murder, the acquittal of the accused by an all-white jury and the nonviolent protest movement organized by Chavis who was a young high-school teacher at the time.
Read more about Chavis and his inspiration for moving to Montclair here.
Chavis, who was born in 1948 in Oxford, North Carolina, has been chief executive and co-chair since 2001 of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, which he co-founded with Russell Simmons, the fourth-richest figure in hip hop. He is a former CEO of the NAACP who, as a 12 year old in 1960, was the first black person to hold a library card at Oxford’s whites-only library, and later, in 1968, worked for the presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy.
The 2-hour-long film, directed by Jeb Stuart and starring Michael Rooker and Omar Benson Miller, is now showing at AMC Loews Jersey Gardens.
