More Rain, Flood Warning in Several Counties

weather3.jpgThe threat of heavy rains and danger from rains isn’t yet over for the region. Rainfall, which began early today, has been forecast to continue for two days in parts of NJ, Connecticut and NY.
Forecasters warned residents to brace for heavy rainfall of 3 to 6 inches, which is expected to taper off by late Tuesday. A flood watch was raised this morning to a flood warning for urban areas and small streams in the counties of Bergen, Essex (including Orange, Millburn, Caldwell and Bloomfield cities), Passaic and Union, the National Weather Service said. Temperatures will range between 56F and 44F.
The massive amount of moisture will fall on nearly saturated soil, leaving the water nowhere to go and raising the flooding risk for already engorged rivers and their tributaries along northeast NJ. City areas may not be spared and flooding is possible in basements, too, NWS said.

Water may pond in urban areas, on highways and underpasses as well as other poor-drainage spots. NWS advised those traveling in cars not to cross water-covered bridges or low water crossings as the water may be deeper than it appears.
With the grim weather outlook, commuters heading into NYC or hoping to return early this evening for Passover celebrations might want to factor in plenty of travel time.

My basement here is waterlogged. My beach house basement is an indoor pool. Still, I’m fortunate to live far enough away from rivers so I don’t have to worry about evacuation. Global climate change….

I live on a small hill – I’ve often wondered how far we are from the bottom. Well, looking out my window this morning it was clear. The guy 3 houses down lives at the bottom – his yard is completely under water.
It would have to rain a lot for me to have any significant water in the basement. Therefore I no longer believe in global warming, as it’s unlikely to flood my basement during my lifetime.

Even if JG had two well built houses, ROC, they’d use far less energy than one garden variety NJ house.

  8. POSTED BY Right of Center™  |  March 29, 2010 @ 12:33 pm

…and twice the energy of ONE well built house.

So, if JerseyGurl didn’t own it, it would cease to exist? I’m struggling with comprehending your logic here, if there is any.

Actually, ROC, you are surely aware that some houses have energy bills down around $500 per year – they rely on the sun, the wind, and excellent insulation, and the heat coming up from the collars of oil executives when they hear about such things.
So yes, you are right, if JG had two of those, her energy bill would be around $1000 per year, if she managed to be in both houses at the same time every moment. So your math is correct, under those circumstances. If only there were two JG’s.

Mike makes an excellent point. The rich should not be castigated for their very large carbon footprints, because for every rich dude like jerseygurl rattling around in an empty mansion that’s climate-controlled all year round, there’s some tiny apartment with four families living in squalor. It all averages out.
By the way, if anybody is ever in the mood for a swim, please feel free to take a dip at the swimming pool in the basement of my mansion on Upper Mountain Ave, which I keep heated 24/7 to a nice comfortable 75 degrees.

“So, if JerseyGurl didn’t own it, it would cease to exist? I’m struggling with comprehending your logic here, if there is any.”
Let me draw you a picture Mike.
Let’s say there are, oh I don’t know, 250,000 second homes in America. All needing some energy to keep the pipes from freezing, to keep the water pressure up, to gas up the utility trucks to keep the electricity flowing or even to keep the nightime lighting switching on with one of those fancy timers.
Now let’s say that instead of those 250,000 second homes they were the FIRST and only homes for some other people? Why then we’d have 250,000 fewer homes to maintain.
    See?
Not that there is anything wrong with second homes. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, I say. Just don’t get on your high horse about “global climate change” when you’ve got an entire house you don’t need.

So ROC, the logic is only those in mud huts or caves are the true global warming spokespeople? Silly ROC.

  14. POSTED BY Right of Center™  |  March 29, 2010 @ 2:24 pm

    or maybe Pharoah, Spiro?
But seriously, if JG can have her second home, then I should be allowed my incandescent bulbs.

I think he’s saying that only people that make reasonable efforts at reducing the carbon footprint, and he’s right. It’s like listening to a lecture on animal cruelty from a leather jacket-wearing vegetarian that “only” eats fish.

Since this is baristanet – I should probably clarify.
By ‘animal cruelty’ I’m talking about meat eating – not beating kittens to death because they make nice ash trays.

    Right up Maoist Mikey’s alley,
    From the article:
One of the main obstructions to meaningful action is “modern democracy”, he added. “Even the best democracies agree that when a major war approaches, democracy must be put on hold for the time being. I have a feeling that climate change may be an issue as severe as a war. It may be necessary to put democracy on hold for a while.”

I realize that you style yourself as intelligent, Comrade Laser, but really, if you’re a “progressive,” then I’m the reincarnation of Eugene V. Debs.
And our cats in general demonstrate more literacy. They even slumber upon Ruth Rendell novels in hardcover.

Actually, ROC, you are surely aware that some houses . . . rely on the sun, the wind, and excellent insulation . . .
Sounds like George Bush’s house in Crawford, TX (seriously).
And lasermike, did you read the article you posted? Although I can fully understand that you would love anyone who suggests that democracy be shut down, the guy goes on to say that the climate scientists in the email scandal have perpetrated a gross wrongdoing:
Lovelock, who 40 years ago originated the idea that the planet is a giant, self-regulating organism – the so-called Gaia theory – added that he has little sympathy for the climate scientists caught up in the UEA email scandal. He said he had not read the original emails – “I felt reluctant to pry” – but that their reported content had left him feeling “utterly disgusted”.
“Fudging the data in any way whatsoever is quite literally a sin against the holy ghost of science,” he said. “I’m not religious, but I put it that way because I feel so strongly. It’s the one thing you do not ever do. You’ve got to have standards.”

I would love to see Santorum get the nod. Maybe then the politically comatose members of society will wake up.
