UPDATE: MSU spokesperson Paula Maliandi refuted the statement that the sewage proposal to Clfton came as a surprise: “We absolutely did not spring this on them. MSU has been in negotiations with Clifton for a couple of months.”
Montclair State University dropped a bomb on Clifton when it proposed last week to use Clifton’s sewage lines for new dorms housing some 2,000 students. The revelation came at the Clifton Town Council meeting last week.
Clifton Mayor Jim Anzaldi and council members were not pleased with the sudden plans and tabled the issue until the next meeting, scheduled for April 6.

The long-awaited, and certainly the most architecturally challenging local restaurant, Montclair Station, finally opened Monday, March 29. Rebuilt from the fire-ravaged station house under the scrutiny of NJ Transit, Montclair township, and NJ Historical Society, the project has been years in the making. “This is the first public/private venture of its kind for NJ Transit, generating collateral income,” says entrepreneur Ralph Nuzzo. The prized porte-cochere stands restored at the entrance, and inside, a dazzling menu. More on Food.

Gov. Christie, Student Protesters at Montclair High School

Tuesday, Mar 30, 2010 12:43pm  |  COMMENTS (145)

christiemhs.jpgGov. Christie visited Montclair High School, where he was met with TV media vans and a group of student protesters. We’ve learned that the principal tried to eject a camera crew shooting student protesters, but the governor’s PR staff intervened. A tipster tells us kids who had organized the protest were told they had to be respectful and aim the protest at Christie’s policies and not at the man.
Christie met with and answered questions from students involved in the Civics & Government Institute (CGI) at MHS and then held a press conference. Christie is visiting because of teachers’ salary freezes and staff cuts; Christie is offering more state aid to schools that freeze teacher pay. One female student broke down in tears while asking questions of the governor.
Christie says he finds news that the executive director of the New Jersey Education Association make $550,000 a year, which was broken by a radio reporter at the news conference, “shocking’ and “obscene,” and adds “I’m not going to fix 20 years of mistakes in one year.” Regarding teachers’ unions, Christie says, “These bullies need to be taken on and I’m taking them on. I have to stand up for the taxpayers of the state.”

Situated track-side at NJ Transit’s Upper Montclair train stop, Montclair Station is perhaps the only full-service bistro and bar serving continuously from 6am through 10pm in Baristaville. Restaurant manager Charles Nuzzo was understandably bursting with excitement on opening day.
“We want to be known for serving upscale food at reasonable prices. And convenient. Come in any time for a meal or to graze. We’ll take phone orders from the train; just tell us what time the train comes in, and we’ll have your take-out ready. Or come have a drink at the bar, we’ll have it ready when you want it,” says Charles.

Montclair Doctor Pleads Guilty to Writing Bogus Prescriptions

Tuesday, Mar 30, 2010 9:55am  |  COMMENTS (8)

Montclair resident Stephen L. Ancier was given a maximum five year prison sentence after pleading guilty to writing online prescriptions, NJ.com reported.
The 63-year-old doctor admitted to illegally writing more than 100,000 prescriptions online from 2002 to 2004, without examining a single patient. Some of the prescriptions were for treating erectile dysfunction, baldness and anxiety.
Prosecutors believe the phony prescriptions earned Ancier around $1.5 million. One of his online patients died from overdose in 2004 and another attempted suicide. He blamed his poor judgment on his drug addiction.

Two Arrested in West Caldwell Steroid and Heroin Case

Monday, Mar 29, 2010 4:00pm  |  COMMENTS (3)

Two men, Joshua Soldano and Brian Leaman, both 29 and from Ramsey, NJ, have been arrested by the VIPER Unit, the Essex County Prosecutor’s narcotics and gang task force, the ECPO said.
The arrest on Friday followed leads detectives had received that Soldano was allegedly distributing anabolic steroids in West Caldwell, where he worked as an athletic trainer at a fitness center. He is said to have distributed steroids and hypodermic syringes to an undercover detective from the VIPER Unit during the investigation.
At the time of Soldano’s arrest, he was allegedly distributing heroin to Leaman, and both men were arrested. A search of Soldano’s vehicle yielded about 40 packages of heroin, 18 grams of cocaine, 8 bottles of anabolic steroids and 29 hypodermic needles. Detectives seized $1,661 in cash and $380 in counterfeit bills from Soldano.

Open Thread: Did Christie Steal From Kids to Give to Rich?

Monday, Mar 29, 2010 3:00pm  |  COMMENTS (55)

Did Gov. Chris Christie, who said high police salaries can’t be sacrosanct, slash $1.5 million of state aid to schools so he could deliver tax cuts to the uber wealthy? NJEA President Barbara Keshishian thinks so. Read the rest of her views here. And read about a special petition in support of adequate school funding.
Talk about that, or the continuing grim weather outlook, or any topic of your choice. It’s your open thread.
