Busting The Bloomfield Avenue Blight

Montclair rocks.jpg
The recession has not been kind to Montclair’s central business district. The blight on Bloomfield Avenue has claimed too many storefronts far too long. Just as soon as a new business opens, it seems another one is shuttered. The most recent business to leave a gaping hole is the former Artistic Illuminations, and soon PNC Bank will be leaving 491 Bloomfield Avenue. For the neighboring businesses, it’s a worry. But the marketing arm of downtown Montclair, Montclair BID, is making it their business to put life back into these shop fronts so that Bloomfield Avenue indeed does bloom again. Find out what the BID’s new Vacancy Committee is up to, on Real Estate.

Montclair Vacancy Committee Battles Empty Storefronts

Although Montclair BID can’t haggle on rents with downtown landlords, they caninject a little life in the otherwise bleak landscape of vacant street-level storefronts. Above is the prototype design of “For Sale” and “For Rent’ banners to be posted along Bloomfield Avenue to bring a unified look and a sense of identity to the downtown area. (The final design will be selected soon.) The new signage is just one of the vacancy reduction initiatives Montclair BID’s newly formed Vacancy Committee is undertaking to make the area look more attractive to new businesses and bring new customers to the negotiation table.
What’s the cost of commercial properties these days? No surprise, it’s all about location, location, location.

Political Patronage Alleged in Firing of Bloomfield Library Director

Thursday, Mar 25, 2010 4:44pm  |  COMMENTS (9)

gian at bloomfield library.jpgAn attorney for Gian Hasija, dismissed yesterday from his job as director of the Bloomfield Public Library, told a news conference today that there was a “political agenda” by “certain forces within this town” behind the firing.
The attorney, Timothy Smith, said that Hasija was dismissed about a month after declining to offer full-time employment to a worker who’d been accused of sexual harassment.
Asked whether Hasija’s dismissal was a case of political patronage, Smith said, “That’s exactly what it is, political patronage.”

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
