Would You Spice Up Your Passover Seder?

Thursday, Mar 25, 2010 10:28am  |  COMMENTS (9)

MyVeronaNJ-Floyd-Cardoz-199x300.jpgYes, holiday meals can be great feasts, but I sometimes dread the annual menu repeats (like a certain green been Durkee onion dish one relative insists on serving every year…). Now that Passover is almost here — do you get sick and tired of the same old seder fare? MyVeronaNJ gets a sneak peek at Tabla chef and Verona resident Floyd Cardoz’ take on an Indian-Spiced Passover Seder. Go take a look, then tell us — is it sacrilege to tinker with tradition, or something you embrace?
And if you’d rather go sweet than spicy, check out our own Bernadette Baum’s Diva Indoors for a heavenly Toffee Chocolate Matzah Brittle.

Montclair Police Blotter: Smells Like Crime

Shoplifting stinks for a 47-year-old male who was caught stealing 35 sticks of various brands of deodorant from the CVS Pharmacy on Claremont Avenue.
The store manager called police on March 22 after observing the suspect taking deodorant (valued at $140, $4 a piece) off the shelf and putting them in his dark colored jeans. When the manager approached the suspect, he ran out of the store onto Cloverhill Place.
The manager played the surveillance video to the police, who recognized the suspect immediately, as they had seen him walking on Grove Street on their way to CVS. The police left the store quickly and found the man walking on Elm Street.

Glen Ridge students create a musical version of Macbeth

Nice video from the Star Ledger of the students at the Glen Ridge High School Drama Club preparing their musical version of Macbeth, which runs this weekend at Ridgewood Avenue School. As cast member Abby Duncan said to the Ledger, “I hope the audience comes in expecting something mediocre — a classic high school play — and they leave blown away.” The Glen Ridge Educational Foundation supported the project, including revamping of the stage lighting system, to the tune of $10,000. Times, dates and venue are all on Barista Kids.

Thomas Horton, RIP

thomas horton and daughters.jpgForgive me for the tardiness of this obituary, but we just recently learned of the passing of a longtime Glen Ridge resident, Thomas Horton, a publishing entrepreneur and writer. I find it charming that Horton, who had three daughters, called his business and economic textbook publishing business Thomas Horton and Daughters. Here’s an old picture of the family, with the family truck, in front of their Appleton Place home. (Left to right: Tom Horton, daughters Marcia, Karen, Lee Ann and wife Ann). Two of the daughters, Marcia O’Grady and Karen Ruiz, still live in Glen Ridge and followed their dad into publishing. O’Grady is at Pearson and Ruiz at Oxford University Press.
