Essex County Writers “Meetup” Group Writes On

Thursday, Apr 29, 2010 4:00pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

Meetup 008.JPGWriting in solitude isn’t always easy. One way to combat the isolation and get feedback is through writers groups. Social networking tools have added a new way to connect. In December 2008, The Essex County Writers Meetup Group was formed and, in January 2009, Marc Bussanich, the self-titled “writing guru,” assumed organizational control of the Meetup group.
Under Bussanich’s leadership, the Writer’s Group convenes once a month to share the successes and frustrations inherent to being a writer. Prior to each meeting, Bussanich proposes a writing challenge to the group to stimulate writing. This month, Bussanich’s challenge was to write a story wherein a character is developed through dialogue. Members upload their drafts to the Meetup.com website, where other members of the group read and critique the uploaded drafts.
This members of the Essex County Writers Meetup Group convened recently at the West Orange Whole Foods Market. Seven writers, three men and four women, bearing laptops, notepads and marked-up drafts gathered at a long table to discuss the stories they crafted.
Bussanich began by asking who would like to share their story first. Pat volunteered his short story, “How Whitey Learned to Read.”

Coffee With…Samantha Codling

Remember Mr. Rogers (yes, I know I’m dating myself)? He used to go around and get to know people in the neighborhood. And there were always lots of interesting people. We think that’s true of our corner of the world, too. We’d like to get to know — and let you know, too — the people from different walks of life that make life interesting in Baristaville. Baristanet contributor Tara Williams launches a new feature, “Coffee With…,” a chance to have coffee (virtually) and get to know our neighbors a little better. Williams sat down with Samantha Codling, owner of The Pie Store in Montclair.
Know someone you think we should have coffee with? Write us here.

Tell me about yourself.
I’ve been here in the U.S. for 12 years. When I first came here, I did photo styling and food styling for lots of different people — advertising, magazines, restaurants — that kind of thing.

To Bag or Not To Bag?

Thursday, Apr 29, 2010 10:52am  |  COMMENTS (85)

grocery-bag-261x300.jpgMaybe you have a pet peeve (or two or 10). Here’s mine:
You’re online at the supermarket, and the person ahead of you is getting checked out. They stand there, pretty much doing nothing, (not even catching up on tabloid coverage of Sandra or Brad and Angie). You wonder “Why the heck don’t they help bag?”
I’m not saying you have to step in and bag if there’s a cashier and another employee who is already bagging, but if there isn’t, would it kill you to bag? Tell me, dear readers, if I’m off base, or if you share my consternation. I watched the scenario play out the other night at Kings, when I ran in to grab some items to scrape together dinner. The guy in front of me just stood there, not bagging. He was then joined by his significant other, who also didn’t lift a hand. So tell me…

Commuters Complain of Cold Reception At Upper Montclair Station

Thursday, Apr 29, 2010 9:07am  |  COMMENTS (20)

UPDATE: Councilor Rich Murnick contacted us by phone and Councilor Cary Africk commented here. Both said the same thing — that commuters are supposed to have access to an indoor space and that the issue was being addressed with NJT and the owner. Stay tuned.
Commuters at the Upper Montclair Station stared at the construction site that was the Upper Montclair Station for months years and on bad weather days, huddled under an outdoor tent. Earlier this year, when the building was near completion, we wrote about it here.

The 100-capacity restaurant will include a bar, serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and be open from 6 am to serve early commuters, Nuzzo said.

Breakfast/coffee — and access to the station building — ceased this week, as commuters were greeted with locked doors and a closed restaurant. The owner, Charles Nuzzo, tells Baristanet they tried full breakfast service for a month, then cut back to pastries and coffee. “It just wasn’t being used,” says Nuzzo. “NJ Transit said 400 people use the station, but most of them get to the station two seconds before the train.” Nuzzo adds that the most they ever made during breakfast hours was $30. (The restaurant officially opened on March 29).
The only benefit to morning commuters from the completion of the new structure is an outdoor covered waiting area, an improvement over the tent. Yet, it’s little solace to commuters who were expecting more after such a long wait. One commuter was so disappointed, she wrote it up on her blog, Japanese Dude-Girl. Another emailed us and said of the covered area:

Peace Trekkers Visit Montclair

Buddhist monks.jpgAbout 25 peace marchers, some of whom have been on the road since February, walked up Bloomfield Avenue today, chanting, beating drums and carrying their message of opposition to nuclear power and bombs to the Central Presbyterian Church on Park St., where they’ll be spending the night.
The marchers are members of Footprints for Peace. The organization set off by foot from the Y12 nuclear weapons facility in Oak Ridge, TN on Feb. 12 and plan to reach the United Nations on Saturday. They said the Montclair Presbyterians offered shelter on 24 hours notice.

Knife Assault, Jewelry Theft, Credit Card Skimming

Wednesday, Apr 28, 2010 1:40pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

Montclair police report a knife assault on Mission Street early Tuesday morning.

Police spoke to the victim, a Montclair male, who stated that he had been in a fight with another individual in the residence. The victim’s clothes were ripped and his chest appeared to have been scratched. Shortly thereafter, police located the suspect, Edin Picado, 22 of Montclair, in a nearby room. The victim alleged that Picado had assaulted him with a knife and showed police a broken, bloodied knife handle that he said was used in the assault. It is not clear at this time what events led to the assault. Picado was placed under arrest and charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.Bail was set at $25,000.

Montclair police also report that a resident of Grandview Place in Montclair, returning from vacation, reported to them last night that $16,000 of jewelry was missing. The items included a diamond engagement ring valued at $10,000, a three-diamond ring valued at $5,000 and a pair of diamond earrings valued at $1,000. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Ray Gulbin at 973.509.4739.
Meanwhile, from the Cedar Grove police blotter, comes a report of credit card skimming at the Exxon Station at 379 Pompton Ave. in Cedar Grove. More on that story from NJ.com.
