Library Trustees Warn of “Grave Danger”

Wednesday, Apr 28, 2010 12:25pm  |  COMMENTS (65)

On Monday we spotted this “Budget Cuts: Library Closed” sign in front of the Montclair Public Library. It turns out that this was the first week of new hours forced by anticipated cuts in the 2010 municipal budget. The main library will be closed Mondays, which will also be the only day of the week that the Bellevue Avenue branch library will be open. Previously, the main branch was open seven days a week and the Bellevue Avenue branch was open six days a week.
But the attention-grabbing sign isn’t the only way the library is fighting back. Seven members of the Montclair Board of Trustees have put their own money into buying ad that will run in tomorrow’s issue of the Montclair Times. The ad headline is “The Montclair Public Library is in Grave Danger” and argues that the proposed budget cuts in the current township budget are unfair to the library and “make no financial sense.”

Rails-To-Trails Gets Push From Bloomfield

Wednesday, Apr 28, 2010 11:20am  |  COMMENTS (20)

The Star Ledger reports today that Bloomfield township is pushing hard to get a 12-mile stretch of nearly-abandoned Boonton Line rail tracks converted to recreational use. The idea has been floated for years even though Norfolk Southern railroad, which owns the track, confirms that it isn’t remotely interested. Here’s a map of the proposed route. Read the Ledger story to find out why one Bloomfield councilman voted against the measure.

Edge Brings “Mad Men” Cool to Montclair

Walking through the Mission district of San Francisco last fall, I noticed store after store filled with mid-century modern furniture. I was jealous. Did I have to fly all the way across the country every time I needed an injection of cool?
Not anymore. A few weeks ago, I noticed a big white bowl chair in the window of the former Cisco Station on Bloomfield Ave. in downtown Montclair. Yesterday, I went in to take a look.

Brrrrr

It’s not like there are frost warnings, but at 41° F, it’s time for the fleece jackets to come out again. And for this afternoon, wind warnings. In Baristaville, that makes us worry about falling trees, but it has the National Weather Service nervous about fires.

MSU Students Plan VDAY Fundraiser

Tuesday, Apr 27, 2010 4:00pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

V-day_Poster.jpgMontclair State University students are organizing a VDAY fundraiser, part of a global movement to end violence against women and girls.
“A memory, a monologue, a rant and a prayer” will be performed on April 29 and 30th at 8 p.m. in Life Hall’s Dance Theater, room 123.
Tickets are $5 for students and MSU faculty and $10 for the general public. All proceeds will go towards the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This hospital performs corrective surgeries for women due to obstetric fistula, which develops after a severe or failed childbirth or violent rape.
This year’s goal is to raise about $1,600, which will be enough money for four women’s surgeries.
Last year’s VDAY event raised $4,000 for the Women in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Essex County Safe House (a shelter for battered women and children).

Make Way for Ducklings

It was weather that only a duck–or a brace of them–could love. And Helen M. from Montclair was a witness:

We had a Robert McCloskey moment this morning on Valley Road. I was sitting in my car in the CVS parking lot when I saw a mother duck and about 15 ducklings waddle up the driveway beside the bank and cross the street.

Montclair Center Stage will be taken apart over the next several weeks. Though 100 concerts have been held there over the past four summers, there will be none this year because of expensive repairs needed at the venue.
Montclair BID will be furnishing the area with new benches, landscaping and a downtown information kiosk that will include a complete directory of all Montclair Center shops and restaurants.

Cars From A Marriage Rolls Out Today

Tuesday, Apr 27, 2010 12:30pm  |  COMMENTS (37)

carsfromamarriage.jpg“Cars from a Marriage,” a new novel from Baristanet’s own Debra Galant, publishes today. “Cars” follows Galant’s “Rattled” (2006) and “Fear and Yoga in New Jersey” (2008), but takes a literary detour from satire to a more character-driven read. The book explores one couple’s relationship, through the journeys they take in cars. Wondering how she came up with the idea? Here’s the back story.
Booklist says “Galant’s third novel delivers wit, charm, and characters who feel like next-door neighbors.” Publishers Weekly calls it “an affecting and strikingly honest look at a marriage.”
You’re invited to come celebrate as Deb takes her new book out for a spin at a book party, Thursday, May 6. This Watchung Booksellers event is from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cafe Eclectic, 444 Bloomfield Ave.,Montclair. Sip coffee, eat sweets and pick up a copy for a great Mother’s day gift. Baristanet’s Annette Batson found “Cars” a perfect beach read here. The first two readers who correctly guess where Annette is (in comments) score a copy of the book. UPDATE: Since nobody guessed Puerto Morales, where Annette vacationed, we have a new contest. One book each for the first two people who correctly identify the feng shui problem that freaks Nina out in “Fear and Yoga in New Jersey.” Thanks everyone, we have our winners. The contest is now closed.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
