more protests MHS.jpg
UPDATE: The crowd has pretty much dispersed since Montclair mayor Jerry Fried, who just happened to be driving by, spoke to the crowd. He congratulated students on their protest, but asked them to return to class. “You all know it’s a school day,” he said. Fried urged students to continue fighting by writing letters to legislators and, in an interview afterwards, had only positive things to say about the protest.
The crowd of protestors keeps growing outside Montclair High School. Correspondent Kristie Cattafi estimates that about 150 students are taking part. They’re shouting “no more budget cuts,” holding signs attached to hockey sticks and imploring passing cars to honk. One trumpeter played the Star-Spangled Banner, and the campaign organizer stood on a rock and told protestors, “May 1, we’re going to go to Trenton.”
Cattafi reports that about three Montclair police cars are on the scene, and that officers are mostly trying to keep the kids out of the street.

Students came with signs, a guitar and even a trumpet as they stood on the corner trying to get cars to “honk for education.” They also started several chants, “What do we want? Money! When do we want it? Now!” and “No more budget cuts!”

Woman Arrested After Stabbing Husband in Car

Monday, Apr 26, 2010 1:10pm  |  COMMENTS (14)

A woman was arrested on Sunday, on charges that she stabbed her husband during an in-car altercation, Lt. Scott Buehler of MPD said.
At about 6:30pm, police found Frank Marino, 49, of Newark, in the middle of the northbound lane in front of a driveway on Upper Mountain Ave, near Watchung Ave. He had been stabbed on the right side of his chest, had trouble breathing, and his Mitsubishi Galant was parked in the middle of the street, with the door open on the driver’s side. Residents and passersby had attended to him until police arrived.
He told police his wife, Jacqueline Smith-Marino, 41, also of Newark, had stabbed him during an argument as he was driving. They had earlier left Willowbrook Mall in Wayne.
A black-handled Ginsu kitchen knife with a bloodied, five-inch blade was found in the grass verge by the southbound lane of Upper Mountain Ave. It wasn’t known where the knife had been prior to the incident. Witnesses driving behind Marino’s vehicle said the car suddenly stopped, and moments later, Marino exited the vehicle, visibly bleeding and clutching his chest, and he collapsed in the middle of the street.
Marino was admitted to St Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson and is in critical condition.
Police found 17 prescription pills and three partial ones on Smith-Marino, for which she was unable to produce a valid prescription. She was charged with possession of a weapon, aggravated assault and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, among other charges. She is in custody and bail has been set at $25,000.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
