Mountainside Hospital celebrated National Volunteer Week at the 75th Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held in the hospital’s Bayberry Café. “Throughout its long and distinguished history, volunteers have played an integral role at Mountainside”, said John A. Fromhold, President and C.E.O. “They have consistently adapted to its changing needs and helped to maintain an atmosphere that promotes wellness and fosters healing. Today we are honored to have more than 250 active volunteers of all ages carrying on that wonderful tradition.”

Car Jumps Curb and Smashes into Hampton House

A reader just sent us a picture of a car jumping the curb and hitting a back door of Hampton House this morning in downtown Montclair. She tell us that the driver was injured, but apparently nobody on the sidewalk or in the store was hurt.

If you’re looking for a blast from the past this weekend, check out the Film Forum’s newest movie festival, “The Newspaper Picture.”
The four-week series runs now through May 6. The series covers 50 years of movies that revolved around newspapers. Movies being shown include Citizen Kane and All the President’s Men.

Glen Ridge Kiwanis and Key Club will be holding their annual clothing drive Saturday morning fro 8:30 to 12:30 p.m. They will be collecting clothing, sporting goods, etc.
Also hosted by the Kiwanis Club this Saturday is the Trinkets and Treasures Flea Market. Sell old, new, antique or whatever is in your garage and basement. The Flea Market will be located on 155 Broad St. in the Admin Building parking lot from 9-3:30 p.m.

Glen Ridge Turf Advocates Make Noise Again

Hurrell Field GR.jpgField conditions have been an ongoing mess in Glen Ridge. Last month, we reported that GR’s baseball team needed to reschedule its earlier home games due to the condition of Hurrell field. This week the official in charge of girl’s lacrosse deemed Carteret field unplayable.
“They’ve have been forced to practice in the gym, on little league fields, out of town and have been forced to play every game on the road,” says longtime sports volunteer Jim Grady, who is fed up with the fields and is trying to re-float the proposition of getting artificial turf in Glen Ridge. “Our GRAA Youth Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams will now again have no home games and are forced to practice at Watsessing Park, which is in worse condition then I have ever seen,” he says.
Grady is circulating an email asking people who “agree that our town has become an embarrassment as far as our fields our concerned” to send letters to town administrator Michael Rohal and to Mike Moretti, sports reporter at the Star Ledger.

Glen Ridge Police Release Info on Bank Robbery

From the Glen Ridge Police Department:

On April 22, at 2:56 p.m. the Wachovia Bank branch on Bloomfield avenue was robbed. The actor entered the bank with a black object in his hand and demanded money. The teller complied and handed over an undisclosed amount of large denomination bills. The actor fled the bank and entered a vehicle parked on Edgewood Road towards Park Avenue.
The suspect was described as a tall, thin, black male standing about 6 feet 2 inches, weighing roughly ’170 pounds with a full gray beard. He is described as being between 40-50 years of age. He was last seen wearing a blue knifcap, blue jeans, a dark-colored jacket, and glasses. The Glen Ridge Police Department Detective Bureau, along with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, and FBI are investigating. Anyone with information regarding this robbery is asked to call Detective Sergeant Dean Gnardellis or Detective Nick Salerno of the Glen Ridge Police Deoartment Detective Bureau at (973) 748-5400.

Life After Top Chef for Montclair Restaurant Owner

Season five Top Chef contestant, Ariane Duarte, is keeping busy with her new life after reality TV show stardom. The Verona resident has gone straight back to work cooking at CulinAriane, a Montclair restaurant that she runs with her husband, MyVeronaNJ.com reported.
Duarte is also continuing to work with Bravo and is on the current Top Chef tour. The tour will take her to Westfield, New Jersey; Westchester and Michigan in the next couple of months.

Author James Bradley to Speak at MSU Commencement

jbradley.jpgJames Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers, Flyboys: A True Story of Courage, and The Imperial Cruise: The Secret History of Empire and War, will be receiving an honorary degree at Montclair State University’s commencement.
Bradley will also address the graduating class of 2010.
His book tells the story of the men who raised the American flag during the battle of Iwo Jima. His father, John Bradley was a Navy corpsman who is captured in one of the most famous pictures in American history.
The graduation ceremony will be held on Friday, May 21 at the IZOD Center.
Approximately 3,500 students are expected to graduate.
