On this beautiful Memorial Day, Baristanet pauses to remember the U.S. soldiers who died while serving our country. We’ll have a slide show later today of how Memorial Day honored veterans in our area. Montclair observes the holiday at a ceremony today at 10 a.m. in Edgemont Park and there are old-fashioned parades in Bloomfield and Glen Ridge. The Star Ledger shares how veterans around the state are commemorating the holiday.

And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier’s tomb, and beauty weeps the brave.
~Joseph Drake
It is probably wise(and I write this as a veteran who nonetheless thinks his service was useful, at least to the mauration process, and US involvement in Nam was honorable in the main and well-intentioned) to add a paraphrase of Thomas Gray here, to the effect that the paths of glory often lead but to the grave.
The May issue of “Clifton” magazine had bios of many veterans from my town. So many forever rest 19 20, 21, 22….down to the relative “geriatrics” in their mid-30′s. Puts an entirely different spin on the Who’s vastly silly “Hope I die before I get old” line of cant.
A Deeply heartfelt THANK YOU to all our veterans.
The reasons for service are innumerable. The debt we owe to all who have is immeasurable. I send all those who have infinite thanks.
The Montclair service was very nice.
Our Mayor gave a wonderful, short respectful speech. (He’s still bike boy to me, but today he was bike MAN.)
The little prof and I spoke to some of the vets, thanking them for their service and asking them what they did. Each spoke fondly of their service and were pleased with the Montclair turnout. (Almost as if they thought their service would go without acknowledgment.)
THANK YOU to all the vets and loved ones missing them today.
Thanks to all of you who served…whether conscripted or voluntary – your guts and devotion to our principles of freedom are inspiring to all us who reap the benefits.
To all who have served, many thanks.
God bless all the heroes who were honored today.
I went to the service yesterday in Montclair and thought it was very nice -simple and respectful. Embarrassed to say it’s my first time, as we’re usually away for the weekend. My son was one of the boyscouts involved. I think the boys all got something out of it.
