Montclair BID Executive Director Tom Lonergan announced that Montclair Center has been formally designiated as NJ’s 21st Transit Village community, making the district eligible for grant monies to fund improvements. Montclair Center’s designation extends for 1/2 mile west from the Bay Street Station, along Bloomfield Avenue to about Seymour Street.
Lonergan, thrilled with the recent confirmation from Trenton, said “through its meaningful granting program and valuable technical support, we hope that this Transit Village designation will further leverage the BID’s efforts to enhance the downtown’s east-end business district”
The next Transit Village grant applications are due in only 45 days, so the BID willl be working with the township and the east-end business district to decide which projects to pursue in this round of funding.
Grants are limited to “non-traditional” transportation related projects within the Transit Village boundaries, such as:
- Wayfinding Signage
- Improvements to transit stations
- Information kiosks with transit info
- Traffic flow improvements/ signal synchronization
- Traffic calming measures
- Bike route signs
- Bike/pedestrian paths and lanes
(Tell us in comments which type of improvement you’d like to see first…)
Although BID initiated the application process, Lonergan says it could never have happened without everyone working together. Kudos go to Township Planner Karen Kadus and former Assistant Township Planner Patrick Franco for their tremendous assistance with the Transit Village application. Lonergan also gratefully acknowledged the support of Township Manager Marc Dashield and the entire township council.

It’s worked wonders for Bloomfield.
BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN ROUTES! Please continue to make Montclair more bike and pedestrian safe. Traffic calming schemes related to such endeavors welcome.
