Aroma Palace in Montclair serves more than 100 regional dishes from the North and South of India. Sreekumar Cheramparambil, charming host, owner, and faithful Baristanet advertiser, invited us for dinner this week to mark his one year anniversary in Baristaville.
A UPS computer techie by day, Sree says food is his true passion, and it shows.Upon entering Aroma Palace, heavenly smells waft from the kitchen. Five of us sat down to dinner with a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and feasted on a meal which far surpassed our expectations.
I’ve never tasted Dosas – an Indian version of the French crepe, only much larger – so my first question to Sree was could he make us one. ( It takes some time, so he put the order in right away.) And although I’ve been to India twice and eaten in many Indian restaurants, I had to ask what the difference is between Northern and Southern cuisine. Sree explained: Northern cuisine is all about Tandoori and mildly seasoned dishes. Spicy curries and vegetarian dishes predominate in the South.
We started with two assorted appetizer platters – one veggie, one for carnivores. Items on the veggie platter were nicely seasoned, lightly battered and deep fried. We were pleasantly surprised by the lightness and non-greasy taste of the cheese, eggplant, onion fritters, lentil samosa, and potato. On the meat-eaters’ platter were moist morsels of tandoori chicken, ground beef kebab, grilled shrimp and more, served with tamarind and coriander dipping chutneys, and Masala Pappad – crispy spiced lentil wafers. So far so good!

Why Baristanet Looks Different Today

Friday, May 28, 2010 10:00am  |  COMMENTS (23)

Regular followers of Baristanet know that we’ve been having technical difficulties all week. Some readers have been getting malware warnings and have been unable to get onto the site. Many readers have had difficulty commenting. Please know that our technical staff has been working nonstop on this all week. Nobody has been more frustrated than us. We’ve gotten used to all comments at the end of our posts — even the cranky ones — and writing without instant feedback barely feels like writing.
We now think that we have identified the source of the problem and eliminated it, but it required us to completely take down all our ads and re-install the software. We will be replacing them, manually, all day.
Thanks to everyone who reported their technical problems to us. Thanks, readers, for your patience all week. And a special thank you to our advertisers for their patience while the ad database is reconstructed.

Baristanet contributor Tara Williams goes back for Coffee. This time, she sits down with Suzy Kass, executive director of the Adult School of Montclair.

How did you end up here in Montclair?
Early in my career, I worked at an ad agency as a graphic designer. I left to raise my two sons. After a sabbatical in Germany with my husband, I became inspired and taught myself to silk screen. I started distributing my own prints and greeting cards through galleries. This gave me the flexibility to be with my sons while allowing me to be creative. In 1999, I became an art director at an agency doing pharmaceutical advertising. I learned all the requisite software on the job and was able to strike out on my own in 2001. I had great clients and the Adult School of Montclair (ASM) was one. I returned from a trip to India and was so sorry to find that Lisa Redburn was stepping down as Executive Director of ASM. After some extensive list making (I do this to brainstorm and problem solve) I decided to apply for the job.
