Memorial Day Traveling: Gas Down, Tunnel Closure

Thursday, May 27, 2010 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (0)

If your weekend travel plans include driving, it won’t cost you more to fill up this weekend. The Star Ledger reports that gas prices have actually gone down 11 cents in the last three weeks; here are the prices New Jersey Gas Prices shows closest to Baristaville (tell us if you’ve seen cheaper in comments).
If you’re not heading to the Shore, and instead going to or through the city, here’s a heads up: Delays are expected in both directions at the Lincoln Tunnel this weekend. A roadway improvement project will completely close the center tube, starting early morning on Saturday until Monday evening.
Speaking of the Lincoln Tunnel, if you commute to NYC and are disappointed that the HOV access lane is closed to carpoolers, there’s a petition to bring back the carpool lane.

Interested in seeing a charter school in Montclair? Or, conversely, do you think it would be a terrible thing for the existing public schools? Go to Barista Kids and find out about next week’s public meeting.

Big Film Festival Planned for Montclair

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 2:08pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

film fest loco jpg.jpgRobert Feinberg, whose day job is being the chief lawyer for New York’s public TV station Thirteen, has big plans. He’s organizing a Montclair International Film Festival to take place in November, 2011 and he wants it to be as cool as Sundance, with people “walking around in all black, drinking cappuccinos and going from movie to movie.” To that end, he’s opened a storefront space in the Clairidge Theatre building (donated by Dick Grabowsky) with a ribbon cutting, made up film festival caps and t-shirts, recruited local luminaries like Steve Adubato and Evie Colbert for his honorary board of directors, and convinced Montclair to close Church Street on three different nights this summer so people can come with lawn chairs and watch an outdoor movie. He’s meeting with Susan Cole, president of Montclair State University, next week to talk about partnerships with the school’s film department. He’s applied for 501(c)(3) non profit status, and is hoping to raise up to $1 million to run the festival.
He foresees a festival in which you could “go from venue to venue every couple of hours” seeing movies, using spaces like the Clairidge, the Wellmont and the old Luna Stage. The festival would be juried, and there would be prizes including a “finishing award” to help some worthy filmmaker finish an uncompleted film.

Hold Tight, Baristanet Commenters

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 12:43pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

Clearly it is not a typical day in Baristaville when there are only three new comments on the page. We’ve been experiencing some technical difficulties since Monday, and we think we’ve found the source. But while we tinker on the back end, some functionality is gone. Your comments are always important to us, and we’ll be back and full-speed soon. Meanwhile if you’re one of our 876 Facebook fans, feel free to go over to our Facebook page and talk all you want.

Repair or Replace? That is the Question

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 12:00pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

Montclair Shoe.jpg“Business?” asks Sam Ferrazzno, owner of Essex Shoe Repair & Luggage, 519 Bloomfield Ave., “Business is steady.” That’s not something you hear too often from Baristaville business owners these days. When asked why his business has survived for 24 years, while so many others have folded, Sam replies, rather matter-of-factly, “I guess it’s cheaper to fix them, than buy new ones.”
And Ferrazzno’s right, footwear could be an expensive habit, especially when you need (not want), to continually replace them. So if your dog got a hold of your favorite shoe, or if you’ve broken the heel completely off, Essex Shoe Service or Montclair Shoe Repair, 213 Bellevue Ave., will restore your tattered soles to prêt-a-porter condition! The average cost of a shoe repair ranges between $9 and $14. Maybe not as good as the Old Navy One Day Wonder $1 Sale, but pretty darn good by Baristaville standards. Essex Shoe Repair & Luggage also specializes handbag, coat, briefcase and umbrella repairs.

Bon Jovi Opens New Meadowlands Stadium Tonight

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 10:45am  |  COMMENTS (1)

bon jovi at meadowlands.jpgThink the commute was bad this morning? Just wait for tonight, when Bon Jovi opens the new Meadowlands Stadium. There’s even going to be a flyover by Marines in V-22 jets. Although NJ.com is saying the concert is still sold out, I found $150 tickets still available on Ticketmaster. The parking lot opens at 2 p.m. and it’s a whopping $25 to park. There’s another concert tomorrow night and one Saturday too.
If you’re going, send us your pics or post them on our Flickr group. Meanwhile, if you want a little taste, here’s a video NJ.com posted last fall of Bon Jovi’s mini parking lot concert.

Decamp Commute a Mess This Morning

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 9:19am  |  COMMENTS (0)

Between a six-car pile-up just outside the Lincoln Tunnel (westbound) and tree work on Mt. Hebron preventing the Decamp 66 from getting through, it’s been a long and frustrating commute for bus (and car) commuters today. Mista Barista reports a 45-60 minute backup on Rt. 3 and Clever Commute has sent a slew of messages about delays and buses not showing up. Good luck!

FDU Poll on Christie: People Are Making Up Their Minds

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (5)

gov christie.jpgFairleigh Dickinson University released a new poll on Gov. Chris Christie yesterday, which found that 44 percent of New Jersey voters approved of how he’s handling his job as governor and 42 percent disapproved. But scratch below the surface of the poll data and you discover the big news is that undecideds are making up their minds about the blustery leader. Since March 30, when FDU released its last poll, the percent of people saying they were “unsure” about the governor’s performance dropped from 14 percent to 7 percent. His “excellent” ratings went from 10 percent to 14 percent. And his “poor” ratings jumped from 21 percent to 33 percent.
So, how does Christie fare among the denizens of Baristaville? Go to the jump to vote in our poll.

Super Bowl Coming to Meadowlands

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 4:24pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

It’s official. After four rounds of voting, the 2014 Super Bowl will be held at the home of the New York Jets and Giants.
In honor of the new stadium, the hosting requirements were waived. Opponents said the vote was rigged, but after the final round of voting New Jersey/New York prevailed by winning a simple majority of the NFL’s owners.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
