Jitney, Meet Lamppost

Monday, May 24, 2010 9:13am  |  COMMENTS (1)

jitney-1.jpgThe Glen Ridge jitney lost its brakes as it approached the train station this morning, coming to rest against an electric lamppost across Ridgewood Avenue from the station.
None of the 23 passengers was hurt, but the impact was hard enough to knock the electric light and shade off the pole.
When the brakes failed, “I tried to stop it against the curb,” said driver Roy Campbell. The light pole was my second choice.”

Open Thread: Series Ends but Was Plot Lost?

Monday, May 24, 2010 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (15)

Were you one of millions who tuned in to the Lost series finale last night? Did you stock up on Dharma initiative cupcakes, launch fireworks, or meet up at a restaurant or pub for a series finale party?
Some reactions on Twitter to the end of Season 6: “The final message of Lost: Dogs are awesome,” and “I was so distracted by Lost last night that I neglected to watch the Mets when they actually weren’t being awful.”
(Other series, too, are wrapping things up, including Fox’s 24 and NBC’s Law & Order, later tonight.)
So, if you did watch Lost, are you any the wiser for it? Talk about that, or anything else on your minds; it’s your open thread.

blogger date.jpg “It is a truth universally acknowledged,” wrote Jane Austen in 1803, “that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
Were she writing today, Austen’s first sentence might go something like this: It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single woman in pursuit of a husband or a job must find her prospect geographically desirable — unless, of course, there’s a very good fortune at stake.
Recently I was joined for dinner by two female friends from law school. One friend was looking for a job, and the other was looking for a man. Throughout our meal, my out-of-work friend and my out-of-love friend discussed some promising prospects. The fledgling ventures were then casually, yet strangely methodically, evaluated according to proximity and financial feasibility.
