The owners of the New York Giants and Jets have placed a bid to hold the 2014 Super Bowl at the new Meadowlands Stadium, which opens this week. They will make a final presentation today at the NFL owners’ meeting in Dallas.
Normally, the Super Bowl would have no shot of ever being held in the New York metropolitan area, but because of the new stadium and to honor New York City’s football tradition, the NFL owners lifted their normal location rules.
The usual requirements to host the Super Bowl include having a minimum temperature of 50 degrees or a retractable roof or dome on the stadium. The Meadowlands’ biggest competition for hosting rights come from Miami and Tampa, Fla.
The location announcement will be made today at approximately 4 p.m.
Do you think breaking the rules and having the biggest football game of the year played in New Jersey is a great idea? Or is it a disaster waiting to happen?

“…to honor New York City’s football tradition…”
Let’s see, the NY Giants left New York City in ’73, played a couple of years in New Haven, then one more season in Queens at Shea. They moved to New Jersey in ’76. The NY Jets moved to New Jersey in ’84. That makes the Buffalo Bills the only remaining professional football team in New York State. Let’s have the Super Bowl in Buffalo! Yeah, that’s it — Buffalo!
But I think that having the Super Bowl here would be a great idea: because we only live a couple of miles from Giants Stadium, we could rent our house out at some outrageous rate and spend the long weekend somewhere warm… like Miami or Tampa. No one will be there Super Bowl Weekend… (:>)]
The new stadium opens this week? The 75,000 fans who showed up 3 weeks ago to watch Mexico vs. Ecuador might disagree.
Hmmm — good for the economy, BAD for traffic.
The wonderful thing about this is that by 2014, NJT will have eliminated the Hoboken train entirely, which means jerseygurl will have no choice but to take the bus during Super Bowl madness.
Cold, Walleroo; funny, but cold… just like the butts of the fans who will have plunked down large dosh to sit outside in freezing weather and watch the Super Bowl. But it might be very good for the local enconomy if they can get their act together and provide hundreds of not-too-outrageously-priced hotels rooms by providing transportation to the Stadium and shuttles to local restaurants for their guests. You know the Big Apple is going to raise rates through the roof, cabbies are going to find buttons that change the meter from “Local” to “Outer Space,” and the cost of a burger at TGIF’s in Times Square will top $20. Most of the Superbowl attendees (at least those who are paying their own way) are not named Donald Trump. This is a good opportunity for Rutherford, Clifton, Secaucus, and even Baristaville to make thier presence known. I was not kidding about renting out the house for the weekend if I can do it: friends of mine in Florida have done it a couple of times and pocketed a quick couple of thousand dollars. Key West, here we come!
