Open Thread: Early Retirement and Wind Energy

Tuesday, Jun 08, 2010 3:00pm  |  COMMENTS (5)

Gov. Christie announced today that he will no longer be pushing for public school teachers to retire early. There will be no change in pension plans if they decide not to leave by Aug. 1. In other news, New Jersey is one of 10 states to promote offshore wind energy.
What else is on your mind? It’s your open thread.

    Maura,
They opened for a day, then closed.
Just kidding. I’m sure we’ll know about it… at some point.
I’m psyched Obama is PISSED and looking to kick someone’s ASS TO KICK about the BP Spill.
    It’s only day 50.
He said this right after dancing with Kelly Clarkson last night at the White House.
But as tough as he wants to be, he ain’t no ROBERT CONRAD

Offshore wind energy is a promising supplemental energy source–one of a number of tools in the energy toolkit. It’s definitely not a panacea, though, for several reasons:
    1) Low energy density requires LOTS of installations to get significant amounts of power.
    2) The U.S. “dumb grid” makes long distance tranmission of electrical energy inefficient.
    3) As-yet-unknown long term effects for large installations on the marine econsystem in which they are installed, as well as on any birds in the area or who migrate through.
    4) As with solar, hydro, geothermal, etc., a technique for generating electricity, but not yet of much use in transporation–there are only so many Priuses, Volts, and their ilk on the road.
    5) Also, “green energy” tends to produce fewer jobs and therefore have less economic return to communities than fossil fuel–especially when we source parts and assembly in China. (The energy should be offshore, not the jobs.)
We should be pressing harder, as a nation, on alternative energy, but for the foreseeable future, it’s a supplement to fossil fuel, not a replacement.

I am building a wind-powered burger grill in my back yard. I have it hooked up to political talk radio and that thing is spinning like a dervish!
I went over to Brookdale school to vote earlier today and it was very quiet. Talked to some of the folks and they said it had been quiet, but steady. There seems to be a lot of differences of opinion cited in all the hoopla around the Democratic primary, so I am hoping that a lot of people vote — it cuts down on the losers who don’t vote then bitch about the outcome. It will also be interesting to see how some of the national races turn out, too. I can’t wait for the PARTY of NO to take back some seats so we will clearly be able to see who the uncooperative, naysaying bastions of bureaucratic bumbleheadedness truly are.

I'm starting to see that our political strife on this planet and definitely here on B'net is due to a lack or abundance of Oxytocin. We can't help what we do or think, our bodies, dna, etc. are running the show. We are meat puppets to our hormonal & chemical urges. In the words of the immortal Bela Lugosi...."Pull dee string, pull dee string!" PAZ in Ed Wood land.
