2010.jpgBloomfield High School had to hold its graduation indoors because of arsenic contamination at Foley Field. Montclair’s graduation is taking place indoors because of a threat of thunderstorms — even though the sun’s out and the chance of rain has dropped to 10 percent. Too bad. At least Bloomfield lets its Class of 2010 march down Belleville Ave. from the Oakeside Cultural Center to the high school. Here’s how it looked at Oakside at 7 p.m.

Summer Picnic Series: Have Cheese, Will Travel

Thursday, Jun 24, 2010 5:00pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

Tallmadge 008.jpgTucked away in Upper Montclair Plaza, you’ll find Tallmadge Cheese Market. For a cheese lover (such as myself), it’s like finding the end of the rainbow.
Allin Tallmadge, professional cheesemonger, and owner of Tallmadge Cheese Market, is a cheese lover too. In a way, it was love that initially led him down the cheese path. In 2001 Allin journeyed to Tuscany with his wife, where they enjoyed the many enoteche of the region. Following this buon viaggio, Allin decided to immerse himself in the cheese culture and become a cheesemonger.
In the video interview, Allin discusses his “cheese stable” and tells us which cheeses tolerate heat and travel well. He also shows us “bloomy rinds,” examines the cross section of Ossau-Iraty and suggests a few accompaniments from the Tallmadge Mediterranean Pantry. (Note: In the video, please forgive my stripes, and the resulting optical illusion called a moirĂ© pattern.)

Bloomfield: Bird Feeders OK But You Must Keep Area Clean

Thursday, Jun 24, 2010 11:00am  |  COMMENTS (12)

bird feeder with squirrel.jpgIt’s perfectly OK to have a bird feeder if you live in Bloomfield but you must keep the ground around the feeder clean and free of seeds, according to Vincent Nicosia, chief inspector of the Bloomfield Health Department.
This issue was recently brought to our attention when we heard about a Bloomfield resident threatening to report his neighbor to the board of health because he felt she had too many bird feeders on her property. The feeders, he claimed, were attracting all sorts of critters not only to her backyard but to his as well where they were creating a health nuisance.

Remember Brookdale Soda?

Thursday, Jun 24, 2010 10:33am  |  COMMENTS (14)

brookdale birch beer.jpgAh a hot summer afternoon, back in the day, when basements were still called cellars … and they all contained a nice stash of the local favorite, Brookdale Soda. It was made and bottled on Sylvan Ave. Rd. in Bloomfield from the late 1920′s to the late 1980′s, when the Pieretti family sold it to a company that went out of business six months later. Joseph Pieretti, a realtor in Bloomfield, whose father owned the business, says there’s a resurgence of interest in the brand, and he gets emails from people all over the country.
