junecaterheads.jpgThe first annual Friends of 1978 Arts Center event was Thursday night in Maplewood. To thank members for their support throughout the year, the Center provided great food, great art and a great time. Catered by SOMA’s very own Chef Jesse, the crowd feasted on ‘New Carolina Cuisine’ crab cakes and pulled pork strudel.
“What is most attractive to me about 1978, is that this is a place where formal art meets the informal. You have high quality art in a very accessible place,” said new member Barbara Heisler.
The event featured the simultaneous opening of two shows. On the Board 2 displayed encaustics, pencil drawings, collage, paintings, photography and sculpture by 1978′s current board of directors. The second exhibit is the work of sculptor and 1978 patron, June Cater. Her series of clay heads is called On the Shelf.
The evening concluded with a request for continued support and an announcement of the fall line up of exhibits and classes, including a breast cancer survivor show in October and a Small Works show in December. Upcoming classes included watercolor and photography.

I would love to see Santorum get the nod. Maybe then the politically comatose members of society will wake up.
