More on the small single-engine airplane that crashed last night around 5 p.m., bursting into flames and killing three.
The plane, an 2005 Cirrus SR-22, departed from an airport in Plattsburgh, New York and was supposed to land in Essex County Airport in Fairfield yesterday afternoon, said Fairfield Police Deputy Chief Steven Gutkin in a press release. “The aircraft attempted to land on Essex County Airport Runway 4 but aborted the landing for a yet undetermined reason. The aircraft then apparently went out of control as it climbed from the departure end of Runway 4 prior to striking the ground.”
The plane was owned and piloted by Margaret Smith, 70. Other passengers were Michael Ferguson, 44 and his wife Theresa Ferguson, 47. All three were from New York and died in the accident.
The investigation of the crash will be continued today by the Fairfield Police Department, Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Essex County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety board (NTSB).
