It’s kind of quiet around these parts, or maybe it’s just that we’re all inside with our air-conditioners, but earlier today, A-Rod hit one for the record books when he clocked his 600th homer. And just moments ago, a federal judge ruled the California’s ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. Strike up a conversation, Baristaville. It’s your open thread.

Neither item matters a whole lot to decent, law abiding Americans.
After all, the Yankees are in New York. The federal judge is in California. Neither one is in the REAL America, just ask Sarah.
Oh, but wait, that approved Mosque is in NYC too ! Suddenly Sarah wants gubmint intervention in a local real estate transaction.
Sarah’s pale in comparision to Bristol’s boyfriend’s shenanigans.
“Bristol’s boyfriend’s shenanigans” Latest word is she dumped him.
She dumped him because he got another woman pregnant (allegedly). That whole family belongs on Jerry Springer.
I am happy about the overturn of Prop 8 but we still have a mountain to climb. It’s a big country out there.
Happy birthday, Barack Obama. It freaks me out that I am older than the President of the United States.
In other news, Giuliani’s 20-year-old daughter who attends Harvard got busted for shoplifting at Sephora in NYC.
A-Rod has hit 600 homers*
Prop 8 overturn: when NJ passed it’s Civil Union statute allowing same-sex couples to enter into domestic partnerships, it eliminated the same privileges for opposite-sex partners who are not and do not want to be married. Unless both parties are over 62 or had already registered a domestic partnership prior to the 2007 Civil Union law, they cannot enjoy the same benefits that same-sex partners can. Nothing against same-sex partnerships, but how about leveling the game for all?
Rudy will somehow blame Donna Hanover for this.
* juiced.
Don’t care about A-Rod or baseball at all from the last 20 – 30 years. All the steroid shenanigans have convinced me that any records broken after ~1984 should be reverted back to the original holders.
Re Prop 8: I’m glad it’s been overturned. That CA didn’t have same-sex marriage makes only slightly less sense than NY not having it.
That’s what, 2 states (MA & CA) down , 48 to go (Sorry, NJ’s “Civil Union” nonsense only half counts)?
Just saw a blurb that Ken Burns is returning to his Baseball documentary (1994) to update it to take into account the steroid issue, the rise of Hispanic ball players, and the breakthrough World Series win by the Boston Red Sox. (Burns is from New Hampshire, after all.) It is called “The 10th Inning” and runs on PBS end of September.
Everything is in the back seat now. I look over at the passenger seat and see the empty cat carrier that I am returning home with after having my beloved Simba euthanized yesterday. He had cancer, had stopped eating a week ago and was clearly suffering. We still have three cats, yet the house seems so empty now.
What’s a home run?
Sorry to hear that, MB. How sad.
I too am extremely sorry to hear of your loss, MellonBrush.
Oh MB, I’m so sorry to hear that.
MB sorry. How kind that you didn’t allow him to suffer. If only we had the same options for humans.
Oh Mellon, I had to do that once 20+ years ago and it still makes me cry, so I know how much it hurts. But you know you did the right thing.
So very sorry for your loss.
Thank you all for your words of kindness. Simba is chasing butterflys at the rainbow bridge and getting used to his new vegetarian diet.
OMG the Rainbow Bridge! waaahh! :’(
Simba is playing with my Calvin!
Simba always liked to groom other cats. I bet he and Calvin will be sharing a ‘snuggums’ in no time at all.
Is anyone out there watching ‘Minute to Win it’? It’s a game show where contestants perform small feats of physical acumen and as they successfully perform each feat they win more money.
On last night’s show, a couple walked away with 250 large. Not a bad haul for manipulating cups, marbles, pingpong balls, toilet paper, cans, string, eggs, the list goes on.
I think it’s going to be a huge hit.
It’s a perfect show to watch when you don’t want to get bummed out by all the ‘killing’ that seems to be in fashion for primetime these days.
MB, I’m so sorry for your loss. I am certain that you gave him a wonderful home.
Oh MB! I’m so very sorry!
As Martta knows, one of our three dogs (our Scottie. He’s a very good lad) has two kinds of fatal cancer. He’s the oldest (13), but the diagnosis (two weeks ago) was a shocker (although it explains a lot). We cancelled our vacation to keep an eye on him. If we’re lucky, he’ll be around for a couple more months. However, like you, I don’t believe in any sort of suffering.
I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts!
Deborah,
Sorry to hear about Scottie. Give him lots of hugs and kisses. Miracles do happen. If anything can cure him, Love might.
In a group of people that can be very contentious at times, people still agree about the special love that only a pet can give and the ferocious grief that accompanies their passing.
Hang in there. I wish you comfort and peace.
Yes, I was watching Minute to Win It. It’s been on for a while now I believe. Pretty entertaining to watch, except for Guy Fieri. I can’t stand him.
As for A-Rod, I think it’s great that he hit his 600th and I can’t wait for him to hit 800. All the steroid talk is ridiculous. If you took every player who took steroids, HGH, amphetamines, or any PED out of the game, you’d be left with two teams. There is no fair way to punish the offenders, so I say what’s in the past is in the past. Moving forward, MLB is doing the right thing with more stringent testing and exploring the possibility of a less invasive HGH test. So cheers to A-Rod!
Moving forward, MLB is doing the right thing with more stringent testing…
Isn’t that the same line they used in 1991 when the MLB officially banned steroids?
I’ve never been a believer in the “if everyone does it, it’s no longer against the rules” mentality that so many baseball fans seem to have.
I’ve said in the past and I’ll say again the 3 steps to eliminate performance enhancing drugs from professional baseball:
1) $500,000 annual salary cap. This will help alleviate the pressure put on athletes that drives them to the drugs in the first place. It might also have the added bonus of making decent seats actually affordable again.
2) Weekly drug tests during the season and truly random monthly testing during off season so long as a player has an active contract (none of the “Your drug test is coming up in 4 weeks, just so you know” nonsense that they’re currently doing).
3) If a player tests positive and fails their appeal, they are suspended for the rest of the season and their pay for that year is forfeit.
