Sooner or later, every Maplewood resident sees it: the flashing lights of the Maplewood First Aid Squad outside a house on your street, giving emergency assistance to a neighbor. This week, the squad is asking Maplewood residents for a different kind of aid, raising money for the volunteer organization with its 1st Annual Emergency Services 5K Walk.
On Saturday, September 11, at 4 p.m., approximately 30 members of the squad will take a 5-kilometer walk that will begin at its headquarters, 129 Boyden Avenue, and go through the town. They’re asking people to sponsor the walkers with a donation, either online or to PO Box 572, Maplewood, NJ 07040.
“The event was the brainchild of our fundraising chairperson, LaVerne Peterson,” says squad captain Bruce Mandel, who hopes to raise both awareness and funds for the squad, which is comprised of everyone from “teachers to entrepreneurs to stay-at-home parents who decided that they want to do something worthwhile for their community.”
One of the upcoming first aid squad projects that the walk could help fund is the December 11-12 CPR Marathon, a full weekend of CPR instruction for residents. (According to Mandel, “Rumor has it Santa may teach some of the courses.”) For more information on the Maplewood First Aid Squad and the 5K walk, visit maplewoodfirstaid.org.
