Chemical Attack Drill at Mountainside Hospital

If you drove by Mountainside Hospital last week and saw a bunch of people outside wearing space suits, you weren’t witnessing the docs playing dress-up as astronauts.

In fact, you were witnessing a fake chemical attack drill. The hypothetical scenario behind the drill was that a chemical contaminant had been released at Newark Liberty Airport, resulting in a large number of exposed people appearing at Mountainside and other hospitals for treatment. Sure, the cooler, crisp days are a sign that autumn is arriving, but I always know it’s coming when Starbucks rolls out its Pumpkin Spice Latte. Pumpkin is really what autumn is all about to me.

Barista Kids has your guide to where to pick your own pumpkins, and of course, you can still pick delicious apples now too. Find out where here.

Tears and Prayers for Slain Student at Seton Hall

BY  |  Sunday, Sep 26, 2010 12:41am  |  COMMENTS (1)

A box of tissues was placed at the end of every row, and even before a choir of priests began by singing “Amazing Grace,” the tears began to flow.

More than 400 people — fellow students, faculty, and friends — attended the community prayer service at Seton Hall Saturday night for Jessica Moore, the 19-year-old sophomore who was shot and killed at an off-campus house party in East Orange on Friday night. The Star Ledger reported that partygoers got trampled in the rush to escape the mayhem. Besides Moore, four others were shot.  Continue Reading

A 19-year-old Seton Hall student, Jessica Moore of Virginia, was shot and killed at a party last night in East Orange. Four others — including two other Seton Hall students — were shot at the same party.

According to a story in the Star Ledger, the shooter was turned away from the party. But a notice on Seton Hall’s website says that the gunman had been at the party, left after a fight and returned with a gun.

A community prayer service for the families involved is being held on campus tonight at 9 p.m. Continue Reading

Hamburger Named for Montclair’s Porchistas

BY  |  Saturday, Sep 25, 2010 11:00am  |  COMMENTS (0)

Someone tell Josh Ozerzky that Baristaville’s got a new burger for him to try. Ok, so technically, you don’t order it in Baristaville (it’s brand new on the menu at Lucky 7′s Tavern in Jersey City), but it’s named after one of Montclair’s favorite indie bands, The Porchistas.

The “burger with taco fixings garnished with Cholula ketchup” reflects the hispanic influence in the band’s music, and maybe also their  substance with a side of fun approach to performance. Continue Reading

Mr. Colbert Goes to Washington

BY  |  Saturday, Sep 25, 2010 9:43am  |  COMMENTS (20)

Fatuous testimony and outright lies are par for the course on Capitol Hill, but a performance in which practically every word out the witness’s mouth means the exact opposite is either a new high or a new low — depending on which side of the aisle you sit. His schtick and reason for testifying: a supposed one-day stint as a migrant worker.

Although there were certainly titters in the hearing room of the House Judiciary Committee yesterday, it seems that Colbert got a similarly chilly reception yesterday to the one he got in 2006 when he delivered the keynote at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 2006.

What think you, ladies and gentlemen of Baristaville’s esteemed jury of kibitzers?

Running into Bobbi Brown (Sort Of) in Amsterdam

BY  |  Saturday, Sep 25, 2010 8:56am  |  COMMENTS (2)

Bobbi Brown wasn’t in Amsterdam for her book opening on Thursday night, but I was. Not that I actually jetted over to Amsterdam just to welcome ”Beauty Rules” to the Netherlands (It was welcomed here on Tuesday). I just happened to be on the final night of my vacation, around the corner from the famed Cafe Luxenbourg, when Mista Barista noticed the sign on the window of the American Book Center offering free makeup lessons and samples to welcome Bobbi’s new book. ”It’s tonight!” he said. “It’s now.” Continue Reading
