Seed 387 Brings SoHo Vibe to Millburn

BY  |  Thursday, Oct 28, 2010 4:00pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

You’ve got to marvel at a new business that shies from advanced publicity for fear of being swamped by buyers on opening day!

In the case of Millburn’s new homewares and lifestyle store, Seed 387, their confidence looks like it was justified, given that impatient prospective customers were battering on the doors ahead of opening earlier this month.

The store, which has a downtown SoHo/Brooklyn vibe, stocks a stylish, funky-edged range of soft furnishings, kitchenware, furniture, jewelry, home and clothing accessories. Millburn’s taste in décor is typically seen as a little more conservative than neighbouring Maplewood or Montclair, but Seed 387’s partners Judy Rudman, Nancy Levy and Andrea Gabay think the town will lap up the look, “People are happy to see this style here,” said Rudman.

Jack-O-lanterns to Light up Presby Iris Gardens, Tomorrow

BY  |  Thursday, Oct 28, 2010 2:00pm  |  COMMENTS (3)

It’s a great visual image, to think of the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens lit by jack-o-lantern in the autumnal darkness.

That’s what you’ll see if you visit tomorrow evening, October 29, between 6 and 9 p.m. The event, called “Garden Aglow” celebrates the fall re-blooming of Presby’s Remontant Irises, and of course, halloween.

On display will be elaborately carved botanic, floral and nature-themed pumpkins, created by local artists. Community members are invited to bring their own (botanical or nature-themed) pumpkin carvings to add to the collection. The Jack-O-lanterns will line the flower beds throughout the gardens. Essex County is providing the candles.

There will be activities for children, live music and seasonal refreshments. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: most imaginative, most elaborate, and most artistic.

An Ordinary Cyclist, An Extraordinary Adventure

BY  |  Thursday, Oct 28, 2010 12:11pm  |  COMMENTS (3)

Looking for something to do last weekend, I settled on this offering from the Baristanet calendar, a tour of Rosedale Cemetery offered by the Victorian Society of Northern New Jersey. It was a lovely way to spend a balmy afternoon, but even better it introduced me to Gary Sanderson, a Verona man whose calls himself an “ordinary bicyclist.” As it turned out, Sanderson, who owns 200 antique bicycles, is anything but ordinary.

What’s Up With this Maplewood Lawn Sign?

Is this the start of a new Spousal Appreciation Movement? Or a very public apology? They’re debating it over at Maplewood On Line. The sign is planted on the front lawn of a home on Midland Blvd near Suffolk Ave.

Luna Settles Into a New Home

The Luna Stage is back from the dead. Or at least real estate purgatory. That alone is cause for celebration. But the company’s opening offering rewards fans of strong directing and acting.

Luna has returned with “The Old Settler,” the late John Henry Redwood’s 1997 domestic drama set in 1943 Harlem.

It’s a window on a lost world of women working as domestics, urban refugees from the rural South, resisting or embracing the temptations of New York.

McCarthy vs Lazar: It’s About Bloomfield Development

BY  |  Thursday, Oct 28, 2010 9:01am  |  COMMENTS (25)

The long-standing issue of Bloomfield’s downtown development could be the deciding factor in the mayoral race between three-term Democrat incumbent Raymond McCarthy and Republican challenger John Lazar.

McCarthy has been a champion of the development, but the project has been stymied by legal and political battles. The Republicans say he’s had his chance to push it through and are peddling an alternative idea to the existing plan; that of building a hotel conference center in downtown.

Real Estate Forecast Calls For More Pain

Wednesday, Oct 27, 2010 4:30pm  |  COMMENTS (39)

New this week: Real estate whisperer Jeffrey Otteau made another dire prediction about the next six months: Home prices could drop even more. Locally, Montclair homes for sale at 4 Kenneth (-$20,000), 125 Gordonhurst (-$50,000) and 10 North Mountain (-$20,000, pictured) all dropped their list prices this week.

Realtor Roberta Baldwin was bumped by news of the Eloise and Charlie Sheen at the Plaza shenanigans from ABC’s Nightline last night; Baldwin was to talk about the current housing market. Baldwin and the rest of the Keller Williams team are opening up a new office at Glenmont Plaza (aka Panera/Smashburger mall).

In other moves, realtor Adriana O’Toole and a team of colleagues from Montclair Realty will be moving to Remax’s Valley Road office in mid November, where they’ll be known as the Montclair Realty Team at ReMax Village Square.

Dear Fellow Montclair Taxpayers…

If you live in Montclair, you’ll be receiving this letter soon. Councilor Cary says in response:

Here is the tax letter that the Mayor sent out today. Many good points, but I wish he would have let the entire Council write the letter. I suspect we would have worded it somewhat differently.

One “minor” issue. I think excuses should have an “expiration date.” The “it’s all our Prior Manager’s fault” excuse should have expired a year ago.

Christie to NJ: Here’s Your New Tunnel

We told you this already a few weeks back, but today, Governor Chris Christie terminated the Access to the Region’s Core project again, and it seems that this time, he really means it. So Baristaville, say adios to ARC and a big hello to your future commuting tunnel.

Seeing Red Over The World Series?

BY  |  Wednesday, Oct 27, 2010 1:02pm  |  COMMENTS (11)

When more than 900,000 Cablevision customers in New Jersey try to watch the first pitch of the 2010 World Series tonight, instead of seeing the great American pastime, they might just see red.

An ongoing dispute between Fox and Cablevision over how much the cable company should pay to carry stations WNYW and WWOR in New York City and WTXF in Philadelphia, has caused much customer frustration, particularly during this busy sports season. With only a few hours to go before the World Series is due to begin, Cablevision is calling for the Federal Communications Commission to intervene and enable them to restore service to fretting baseball fans.

Tonight’s first pitch will be at 7:57p.m.

Where will Baristaville’s Cablevision households go to watch tonight’s game between the American League champion Texas Rangers and the National League champion San Francisco Giants? Where are your favorite sports bars and other public viewing locations?

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
