Runaway Bunny on Riverview Drive

Runaway bunny found in Montclair

A reader from Montclair writes:

This morning (Oct. 26) on Riverview Drive, in front of the Bonsal Wildlife Preserve, a runaway bunny was discovered. Fat, furry, and friendly, this is clearly someone’s lost pet rabbit. Luckily, the local preschool set (and attendant mothers) discovered it just in time to save it from an impending altercation with a few outdoor cats. Neighbors stood sentinel while awaiting Animal Control to bring it to safety. What we do know is that it is a light brown, domesticated animal that enjoys nibbling bok choy and being petted by small children. What we need to know is where its home last was.

Any leads? Please contact the Montclair Animal Shelter.

Seasonal Sushi…And Another Smashburger Opens

Wednesday, Oct 27, 2010 12:03pm  |  COMMENTS (13)

This deconstructed Jack o’ lantern looks like something from a quickfire challenge on Top Chef, but you can find it right here in Montclair. MyVeronaNJ has the story on the Halloween Roll.

Speaking of Halloween, it’s almost here and yes, Five Guys in Montclair still hasn’t opened, but today, at 11 a.m., Smashburger in Clifton opened its doors (remember when Montclair was the first store in NJ?).

We’ve heard good things about Plum, the new casual eatery in the boxcar diner-like space across from the Y (formerly occupied by Greek Delights and then Market, which have both moved to larger digs). Who remembers what was there before Greek Delights? And what are you having for lunch?

Possible Bias Crimes Come to Tolerant Maplewood

BY  |  Wednesday, Oct 27, 2010 10:47am  |  COMMENTS (3)

Maplewood — known to be one of the most gay-friendly nabes in Baristaville — has now become the unlikely setting for two separate possible gender-bias murders within the past year.

According to long-time resident, Leah Gomberg, the town’s diversity is a big draw for her family of 5. “I love that our neighborhood is home to so many different types of people, but it feels like we all have a lot in common. Really we’re all the same.” Gomberg’s three sons, ages 13, 11 and 5, have friends whose parents are same sex. “It doesn’t even phase them,” she said. “It’s just a normal part of life in Maplewood.”

Today, Wednesday, Oct. 27, three defendants are facing possible bias crime charges in the Essex County Veterans Courthouse, Newark. The arraignment will be in the courtroom of the Honorable Peter Vazquez.

Defendants Marquise Foster, 25, of North Plainfield and Alrashim Chambers, 23, of Newark are scheduled to be arraigned for the murder of Victoria Carmen White, a 28-year-old transgender female who last resided in Newark.

Defendant John Staten, 30, of Orange is scheduled to be arraigned for the March 2010 murder of 27-year-old Arthur Downey of Maplewood.

Vampire Movie and Live Organ Concert at GR Church

BY  |  Wednesday, Oct 27, 2010 9:13am  |  COMMENTS (1)

It might not be a religious experience, but the Halloween Pipe Organ Spooktacular at the Glen Ridge Congregational Church on Friday, October 29 at 8:00 p.m. should prove to be a unique one.

For the second year in a row, the church will present a silent horror movie to improvisational musical accompaniment by Thomas Mustachio, the church’s minister of music, who will play organ.

Referring to the recent pop culture vampire phenomenon of Twilight, the event uses the tagline “before there was ‘Team Edward,’ there was Nosferatu.” The church is looking to build on the success of last year’s Halloween-time screening of The Phantom of the Opera by showing the 1922 German movie based on Dracula . Last year’s event attracted some 350 people and proved to be “the largest attendance we’ve had at any of the events in many, many years, except for the Christmas concert,” noted Mustachio, who has been at the church since January 2009. The church is bringing in a special 9-ft. by 12-ft. screen for the event, to be held in its sanctuary, and there will be popcorn.

Every seven seconds, Soles4Souls gives away a pair of shoes to someone in need. For a limited time, Montclair’s Fleet Feet, New York Sports Club in Montclair, Bloomfield’s Murdoch Shoes and the Glen Ridge High School will be collecting gently-worn footwear  to ship to people in need, whether they’re victims of a natural disaster or living in extreme poverty. It is estimated that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unused shoes lying in their closets. The charity can use these shoes to make a tangible difference in someone’s life.

Fatal Fire in West Caldwell

BY  |  Tuesday, Oct 26, 2010 3:31pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

A fire broke out at 9:04 a.m. today in a 2 1/2 story West Caldwell home, killing 69-year-old William Shannon and injuring four others, including two firefighters. Shannon was trapped on the second floor of the home at 14 Crossbrook Lane.

Shannon was an official scorer for Major League Baseball, and lived in the house with his mother, Mildred Shannon, 92. According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Shannon was sent to St. Barnabas with non-life-threatening injuries.

At 9:15 a.m., an “all hands” alert was dispatched, and about 50 firefighters from six local departments responded to the scene. The companies attempted to rescue Shannon, as the fire spread to the second floor.

A third alarm went out at 9:39 a.m., at which time the incident commander called for evacuation of the building, due to a roof collapse.

Command reported at 10:19 a.m., that there was still heavy fire from the roof, and the fire fighters were limited to exterior operations only. At this time, Shannon’s death was reported and the county prosecutor’s office was requested to the scene.

By 10:32 a.m., the main body of the fire had been kindled.

Four patients were transported from the scene. An investigation is underway.

Command was still at the scene of the fire at 2 p.m.

My Favorite Place: Parlor Hair Studio, Montclair

BY  |  Tuesday, Oct 26, 2010 2:00pm  |  COMMENTS (4)

Since moving here almost seven years ago, I’ve fallen in love with so many places in Montclair. What was hard at first was giving up some of the old places, where I used to live. I haven’t done that completely. My kids still see a pediatrician in NYC, (yes we’re crazy). And for a time, very early on, I was commuting back to NYC for my hair – to a place all the way on the East Side no less– until I quickly saw the madness of killing ¾ of a day on cut, color plus travel time.

My hair has always been tricky –super curly, prone to frizz – I’ve had more than my share of bad hair days. When I found a stylist I could trust, I’ve always stayed faithful. Geography was making a decision for me this time – but it turned out to be a blessing.

I found Parlor Hair Studio in Montclair and never looked back — or ventured back across the river. Continue Reading

Can you play hooky for the rest of today? Tell us your plans for busting out of work and other commitments so you can enjoy the fall foliage and amazing weather. Tomorrow they’re calling for thunderstorms, so the leaves will likely take a beating.

This may actually be the peak day of the season.

See the Resemblance?

In Maplewood Center, the spiffy new recycling bins fit in well with the seasonal decor. But then again, recycling is beautiful all over Baristaville.

Anyone besides Bloomfield get their new Joe DiVincenzo home recycling buckets yet?

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
