Montclair-based CupcakeStop will be making its television debut this week on the Food Network’s new show, Food Feuds.

The new show, hosted by Iron Chef Michael Symon, awards the “best” title to one of competing rivals — sometimes putting decade-old feuds to rest — in food categories ranging from cheesecakes to Philly cheese steaks.

In the Thursday, Oct. 28 premiere, Symon will decide which New York City cupcake is the best (and which crab cakes are the best in Baltimore, Maryland), as part of the Cake Feuds episode. Continue Reading

Can Baristaville Really Get Healthy?

BY  |  Tuesday, Oct 26, 2010 10:30am  |  COMMENTS (3)

Eat five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. Exercise more. We all know what we’re supposed to be doing. Yet Americans just get fatter by the year; 23 percent of New Jerseyeans are obese and at risk for diabetes, heart attacks and a whole host of other bad stuff.

Partners for Health (formerly the Mountainside Health Foundation) has a grand plan for turning that around, at least locally. And they’re not just talking about handing out glossy pamphlets. They’re looking for the kind of sweeping community change pulled off by the town of Malmo in Sweden in their “No Ridiculous Car Trips” campaign (see video), which used humor and infrastructure changes to get people on their bicycles to make short trips.

Here’s what Clever Commute says, among other reports (we’re up to around 10 new emails already today):

[NJTT-MandE] Conductor just advised passengers to vent to customer service. NJT, brace yourself, you got some ‘splainin to do.

This just in from NJ Transit:

The following information is current as of 9:05 p.m.

Both derailed NJ TRANSIT rail cars have been re-railed at New York Penn Station. Crews are now working to repair track that was damaged in this morning’s incident. Repairs are expected to be completed overnight. Normal service at Penn Station is expected for Tuesday morning’s commute.

Midtown Direct trains will continue to operate to and from Hoboken Terminal (instead of New York) for the remainder of the service day. Normal Midtown Direct service to/from New York will resume with the first schedued trains of Tuesday, October 26. PATH trains will continue to cross honor NJ TRANSIT tickets and passes between Hoboken and 33rd Street through the last departure tonight.

Ryan DePersio, owner of Fascino, 331 Bloomfield Ave, Montclair, and Bar Cara, 1099 Broad St., Bloomfield, spent an evening giving the Baristas a cooking lesson. (In the photo, from left: Erika Bleiberg, Stacey Gill Dastis, Debbie Galant, Ryan DePersio, Liz George, Georgette Gilmore, Melody Kettle)

We worked along side the Chopped Chef as he taught us how to make Ricotta Gnocchi, Sweet Sausage Bolognese and Tuscan Fish Stew. Like Fred Astaire on the dance floor, DePersio made his art look easy. Watch the video to see the editorial team get their hands in the mix and try to imitate his every move.

Joan Baez and Steve Earle at NJPAC, 10/30

Monday, Oct 25, 2010 1:00pm  |  COMMENTS (40)

We have our winner.

50 years after her heralded debut at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival and the release of her seminal first album, Joan Baez continues to show renewed vitality and passion in her concerts and recordings, and was recently honored with the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Baez and fellow Grammy winner Steve Earle will perform at NJPAC this Saturday, 10/30.

Whether marching on the front line of the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King Jr, inspiring Vaclav Havel in his fight for a Czech Republic, singing on the first Amnesty International tour or standing alongside Nelson Mandela when the world celebrated his 90th birthday in London’s Hyde Park, she remains a force of nature whose global influence as an artist and activist is incalculable.

Steve Earle, the recent winner of his third Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, is a master storyteller in his own right and will kick off the evening with his heartfelt country rock troubadour tunes.

Baristanet has a pair of tickets to Saturday’s concert. To win, be the first to correctly answer the question below in the comment section.
