Seed 387 Brings SoHo Vibe to Millburn

You’ve got to marvel at a new business that shies from advanced publicity for fear of being swamped by buyers on opening day!

In the case of Millburn’s new homewares and lifestyle store, Seed 387, their confidence looks like it was justified, given that impatient prospective customers were battering on the doors ahead of opening earlier this month.

The store, which has a downtown SoHo/Brooklyn vibe, stocks a stylish, funky-edged range of soft furnishings, kitchenware, furniture, jewelry, home and clothing accessories. Millburn’s taste in décor is typically seen as a little more conservative than neighbouring Maplewood or Montclair, but Seed 387’s partners Judy Rudman, Nancy Levy and Andrea Gabay think the town will lap up the look, “People are happy to see this style here,” said Rudman.

Products are showcased in scenes: the spa, the gentleman’s study, the kitchen, her closet and the look’s described as “vintage eclectic” or “traditional with a twist.” Furniture is textured, rough-hewn wood, leather and hide, plush velvets and galvanized steel vintage reproductions. Accessories like sweaters, pyjamas, gloves and scarves come in luxe cottons or cashmere, and soft neutrals, tawny browns, muted oranges and yellows with vibrant hits of turquoise, electric blue and lime green are dominant color schemes.

Although there is a good selection of products at different price points, the store pretty squarely hits the middle market. Pretty eco cotton blankets retail for under $200, Italian cashmere pillows upwards of $325; oiled, laser cut leather jackets which have been flying off the rails are priced around $500, while a baseball-stitched orange leather chair costs $1750.

At the other end of the price range are geometric patterned Jonathon Adler mugs for $18 and kaleidoscope-colored acrylic spoons for $10.50. Stacks of European soaps cost upwards of around $10 and Emma Bridgewater pottery starts at $28. A range of British wall clocks, the type that typically grace trendy London kitchens, start at $69.

I would love to see Santorum get the nod. Maybe then the politically comatose members of society will wake up.
